Respiratory system disease

Selenium is an essential element and is beneficial at low concentrations, serving as an antioxidant. Lack of selenium affects thyroid function, and selenium deficiencies have been linked to Keshan Disease (34). Selenium at high levels, however, is toxic. Hydrogen selenide (which is used in semiconductor manufacturing) is extremely toxic, affecting the mucous membranes and respiratory system. However, the toxicity of most organ oselenium compounds used as donor compounds for organic semiconductors is not weU studied. 

People who should not work with organophosphate insecticides are those with organic central nervous system disease, mental disorders, epilepsy, pronounced endocrine disorders, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, circulatory disorders, gastroenteric diseases, liver or kidney disease, and chronic conjunctivitis and keratitis (Medved and Kagan 1983). 

As discussed in more detail in Section 2.2.1.1, Bates et al. (1997) found a significant increase in mortality from diseases of the respiratory system for residents of the Rotorua area of New Zealand for the period of 1981-1990. Rotorua is in an area of high geothermal activity sampling from a campaign in 1978 indicated a median concentration for hydrogen sulfide of about 20 g/m3 with 35% of the measurements >70 g/m3 and 10% >400 g/m3. Problems with the analysis, however, led these authors to conclude that there were no clear indications of excess mortality.

Reliable correlations were found between lead concentrations in the soil and the incidence rates in the population of Dnepropetrovsk. In the adults, the pollution levels were associated with complications in pregnancy and delivery, diseases of urogenital, nervous and bone-and-muscular system, blood problems and tumors. In the children, the blood, blood forming organs, respiratory system and the muscles and bones were most frequently affected. 

The application of this approach can eradicate the difference in the morbidity rates of different nosologies and estimate an extent of a deviation of parameters from an average for the given disease over the country as a whole. The results showed that in the selected zones of the country, there are remarkable deviations of morbidity rates from the average values overall the Ukraine. For instance, in the industrial zone a significant increase of the morbidity rate of the respiratory system (R2 = 0.83)... 

Approximately 30 y after exposure, there were no significant increases in mortality from overall cancer or cancers at specific anatomical sites, in diseases of the respiratory system, or in overall mortality noted in this cohort. However, the exposure period covered by the study was short, the exposed groups were small, and the exposure levels were not well documented. Consequently, evidence presented in this study is inadequate to assess the carcinogenicity of phosgene.

People who suffer from other pulmonary diseases that interrupt the flow of oxygen are especially sensitive to the irritating effects of SO2 and its particulate derivatives. This gas and several other gaseous air pollutants, to be mentioned in a moment, can cause other, delayed toxic effects in the respiratory system. Note also that these same chemicals are the principal causes of acid rain.

A follow-up study of 29 workers with TMAN-induced immunologic lung disease who had been moved to low-exposure jobs for more than 1 year revealed that workers with late asthma or late respiratory systemic syndrome had improved symptoms, improved pulmonary functions, and lower total antibody against TMAN-HSA. In contrast, 7 of 12 workers with asthma rhinitis continued to have moderate to severe symptoms, abnormal pulmonary functions, and elevated IgE against TMAN-HSA. Elevated IgE against TMAN-HSA appears to be a marker for the subpopulation of workers with asthma rhinitis that does not improve. 

Mainly because the molecular mechanism of these pathological changes has not been sufficiently studied, therapy of asthma, pulmonary illnesses, and other respiratory system illnesses are generally aimed at preventing and relieving symptoms that accompany the disease. 

In Taiwan the ratio of deaths occurring above age 65 of total deaths for a category varied widely. In 1985 the ratio ranged from 33% for diseases of the nervous system to 70% for diseases of the respiratory system. In 2002 the corresponding ratios for these two categories increased...
