Sand or steel shot is suitable abrasive Suitable for bonding polyamide textiles to natural and synthetic rubbers Good adhesion to primer coat with epoxy adhesives in metal-to-plastic joints... [Pg.502]

Cycleweld metal adhesives (Saunders-Chrysler Co.) Resorcinol-formaldehyde adhesives (Penn. Coal Products Co.) Metal-bond adhesives (Havens, Consolidated Vultee-Aircraft Corp.) Furane resin adhesives (Delmonte, Plastics Inst.) and Pliobond (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co.)... [Pg.13]

These adhesives are suitable for exterior use and are unaffected by water (even boiling water), molds, grease, oil, and most solvents. Their appUca-tions primarily include wood, plywood, plastics, paper, and fiberboard. Resorcinol-formaldehydes are excellent marine-plywood adhesives. Curing at room temperature normally takes 8-12 hours, while phenoUc wood adhesives require a high-temperature cure. The adhesives are also used for indoor applications because of their high reliability. ... [Pg.117]

Phenolics Phenol and resorcinol formaldehyde adhesives cure by condensation polymerisation with the elimination of water, and therefore require high curing pressures. They are normally available as two-component systems consisting of a paste resin and a liquid hardener. Traditional uses include wood bonding and plywood fabrication, but nowadays phenolics, especially modified phenolics, are also used in structural bonding of metals and plastics. [Pg.464]

Its principal use, however, is as an adhesive for wood. In this application, resorcinol-formaldehyde has the unique property of setting at room temperature. The bond becomes completely waterproof in 24 h, and in another 2-4 days the bond is stronger than wood itself. Resorcinol resins also find application in bonding cellulose acetate, molded urea plastics, nylon, and various plastic laminates to wood core. They also bond to porous materials such as paper, textiles, leather, and fiberboard. [Pg.485]

Considering plastic substrates, Pritchard [97] cites the dipping of nylon cords into a complex adhesive mixture of rubber and resorcinol-formaldehyde, as used in the production of tyres, as an example where hydrogen bonding may... [Pg.80]

Extensive reviews on short fibers-reinforced elastomers have been published by Goettler and Shen, ° and more recently by Rajeev. Table 7.11 is a list of selected published works on natural fiber-filled rubber composites, sorted by rubber type. Only vulcanizable rubbers were considered in preparing the table thermoplastic rubber and rubber-plastics blends were omitted. As can be seen most grades of conventional elastomers have been considered with quite a large variety of natural fibers. Natural Rubber, SBR, and EPDM compounds have received much attention, as expected with respect to their industrial importance. A bonding system is us in most cases, with resin types (i.e. resorcinol-formaldehyde, resorcinol-hexamethylenetetramine, sil-ica-resorcinol-hexamethylenetetramine) the most frequent ones. [Pg.377]

Polymers. AH nitro alcohols are sources of formaldehyde for cross-linking in polymers of urea, melamine, phenols, resorcinol, etc (see Amino RESINS AND PLASTICS). Nitrodiols and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-nitro-l,3-propanediol can be used as polyols to form polyester or polyurethane products (see Polyesters Urethane polymers). 2-Methyl-2-nitro-l-propanol is used in tires to promote the adhesion of mbber to tire cord (qv). Nitro alcohols are used as hardening agents in photographic processes, and 2-hydroxymethyl-2-nitro-l,3-propanediol is a cross-linking agent for starch adhesives, polyamides, urea resins, or wool, and in tanning operations (17—25). Wrinkle-resistant fabric with reduced free formaldehyde content is obtained by treatment with... [Pg.61]

The catalysts required by plastics may be classified as (1) strong add catalysts (e.g., sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and phosphoric acid alone or in combination with modifiers), (2) latent acid catalysts (e.g., ammonium salts of strong acids such as ammonium chloride generally useful in accelerating the setting of urea or melamine resins), (3) aldehydic catalysts (e.g., catalysts peculiar to phenol-formaldehyde and urea-formaldehyde resins such as paraformaldehyde and hexamethylenetetramine often used in urea and resorcinol adhesives), and (4) peroxide catalysts (e.g., benzoyl peroxide and dicumyl peroxide promote polymerization of polyesters through a free radical mechanism). [Pg.83]

Resins based on phenol and formaldehyde or a combination of phenol, resorcinol and formaldehyde are used in many glues and adhesives. The resins are used for decorative boards, laminated boards for floors, plywood, water-resistant boards, glass and mineral fibres for insulating, brake and clutch linings, abrasive cloth and paper, grinding wheels and moulds for casting metal and plastic. [Pg.592]

LefuThe clear solution contains formaldehyde, CH2O, and resorcinol, C6H4(OH)2.The formation of the plastic is started by adding several drops of potassium hydroxide. Righf. The red plastic has formed in the beaker. [Pg.94]
