To understand the circumstances in which particular features of mass spectrometry, such as high-resolution measurements, MS-MS and cone-voltage fragmentation, selected-ion monitoring and selected-decomposition monitoring, may be nsed to address particular analytical problems. [Pg.186]

The large size of CPOs allows their direct observation. For this purpose, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is the best method [32,34]. Electron microscopic analysis is used for phthalocyanine 3 and its derivatives however, most of the porphyrin derivatives are decomposed by electron beam irradiation. Presently, although only a limited number of researchers are able to perform atomic-scale resolution measurement, this powerful analytical method is expected to be used widely in the future. The author reported a summary of STM studies on porphyrins elsewhere [34]. [Pg.80]

Applications Sector instruments are applied for niche applications such as high-resolution measurements and fundamental ion chemistry studies. Magnetic sector mass spectrometers remain the instrument of choice in areas of target compound trace analysis, accurate mass measurement and isotope ratio measurement. [Pg.388]

Fig. 3. The a-abundance (average of Ca, Mg and Ti) for stars in our Galaxy compared to those in Scl. The VLT/FLAMES high resolution measurements of 92 members in the central field are shown as crosses (from Hill et al., in prep). The Galactic stars come from standard literature sources (see [5] for references). The 5 open squares are UVES measurements of individual stars in Scl [3]. Fig. 3. Despite the benefits of high resolution, measurements of wideline spectra of quadrupolar nuclei under static or MAS conditions are still commonly used in a variety of applications. For both integer and half-integer spins, simulations of quadrupolar lineshapes can yield full sets of NMR parameters associated with quadrupolar and chemical shift tensors and can be used for studying molecular dynamics. [Pg.136]

This section reviews four different experimental approaches that together argue in favor of a temporal analysis function of lobster olfaction. The experiments include high-resolution measurements of turbulent odor dispersal and lobster sampling behavior, electrophysiological recording of in situ single cell responses to controlled and chaotic stimuli, and behavioral analysis of orientation and localization of odor sources. [Pg.160]

High resolution measurements vs. accurate mass measurements... [Pg.699]

If high-resolution measurements are performed in order to assign elemental compositions, internal mass calibration is almost always required. The calibration compound can be introduced from a second inlet system or be mixed with the analyte before the analysis. Mixing calibration compounds with the analyte requires some operational skills in order not to suppress the analyte by the reference or vice versa. Therefore, a separate inlet to introduce the calibration compound is advantageous. This can be achieved by introducing volatile standards such as PFK from a reference inlet system in electron ionization, by use of a dual-target probe in fast atom bombardment, or by use of a second sprayer in electrospray ionization. [Pg.100]

We first define the geometry and instrumental parameters common to high resolntion diffractometry. As a reference, we then develop the dnMond diagram for visualisation of X-ray optics and use it to discuss practical beam conditioners. Next we treat the principal aberrations of high resolution diffractometry tilt, curvature and dispersion. We discuss the requirements on X-ray detectors, and finally show how to set up a high resolution measurement in practice. [Pg.15]

For quadrupolar nuclei, rapid pulsing can improve the signal-to-noise ratio. They are often most readily measured by vidde-line techniques however, as for example (84) and N (79). Many more wide-line measurements have been made of N, which is quadrupolar, than high-resolution measurements of N, which has spin but is expensive. The broadening increases with the nuclear quadrupole moment, which is small for (2.8 x 10 ), Li (4.6 x 10 ), and (—4 x 10 ), and fairly small, between 10 and 10 , for Be, B, N, S, C1, and C1 (the units are e x 10 cm, where e is the electronic charge) (20, 70). The broadening increases with asymmetry of the nuclear environment thus, the line width increases a thousand-fold from the relatively sharp line... [Pg.198]

Higher resolution measurements of the Si-H stretching band in model compounds revealed a significant difference in the frequency of this band between terminal and internally placed hydride groups (Figure 3). For terminal hydrides the frequency was about 2127 cm l, while for internal ones it was about 2167 cm l (Table I). The frequency for the two Sylgards was about 2163 cm l, nearly that for internal placements, and in line with a random distribution. [Pg.172]

Collision induced reactions are also applied in ICP-MS with an ion trap for high mass resolution measurements. Two instrument configurations of the plasma source ion trap (PSIT) are shown in Figure 5.8 a and b, respectively. PSIT I utilizes a linear quadrupole for ion transport and mass selection (Figure 5.8 a) while the PSIT II applies direct injection of ions into the trap (without... [Pg.128]

More reports on the mass spectrometric behavior of 4//-pyrans are available.36,6J 86 112 121,333 The fragmentation patterns were studied in detail for 4//-pyran carboxylates of 68 (X = EtO, Y = Me) and 87b-d, using high resolution measurements and detection of metastable ions.86,112 The main mode of fragmentation involved the loss of an alkyl or aryl 4-substituent to generate very stable pyrylium ions, as shown in Scheme 40. [Pg.300]

Ge(Li) Detector Characteristics. Resolution measurements for the 18-cm.8 Ge(Li) detector were made with the anticoincidence shield in the inoperative mode, with a normal operating bias of 1700 volts, and with a preamplifier designed in our Laboratory (3, 4), and operated in conjunction with a Tennelec TC-200 linear amplifier. Resolution at 1.33 M.e.v. was 2.62 k.e.v., FWHM (Figure 4). The electronic pulser resolution for the amplifier system at a slightly lower energy was 1.86 k.e.v., the total capacitance of the detector was 28 pF, the noise slope was 0.035 k.e.v./pF, and the leakage current at 1700 volts was 0.5 X 10"9 amp. [Pg.216]

Resolution measures the ability to separate two closely spaced peaks. The greater the resolution, the smaller is the difference (AX.) between two wavelengths that can be distinguished from each other. The precise definition (which is beyond the scope of this discussion) means that the valley between the two peaks is about three-fourths of the height of the peaks when they are just barely resolved. The resolution of a grating is given by... [Pg.430]

Even in a molecule the size of benzene the resolution achieved in this way is sufficient to investigate the dynamic behavior of individual rotational states. For this it is necessary to eliminate the Doppler broadening of the rovibronic transitions. Two methods have been applied (i) the elimination of Doppler broadening in a Doppler-free two-photon-transition and (ii) the reduction of Doppler broadening in a molecular beam. Measurements of the dynamic behavior have been performed in the frequency [3] and time domain [4]. We will briefly summarize the results from high-resolution measurements and discuss the conclusions on the intramolecular decay mechanism. Then it will be discussed how the intramolecular dynamics is influenced by the attachment of an Ar or Kr atom to the benzene molecule, leading to a weakly bound van der Waals complex. [Pg.410]

Although the SEMS represents a marked advance in the state of the art for measurement of aerosol size distribution, an important gap remains in current measurement technology, namely, the ability to make rapid, high-resolution measurements of the accumulation-mode aerosols on-line. The limitation of the DMA or SEMS for measurement of particles larger than 0.2 xm in diameter is the multiple charging that allows particles of two or more different sizes to contribute a given mobility fraction. Regardless of... [Pg.202]
