From the mechanistic point of view three basic principles of microbial resistance to drugs are known inactivation of the drug, alteration of the target, and reduced drug accumulation at the target site. However, several variations on these themes are known. [Pg.102]

One reason for the rapid growth in the use of pesticides worldwide has been the "Green Revolution" (5), Although there have been some benefits from pesticide use in agriculture, they also cause significant environmental and public health problems. Mycobacterium is a genus of bacteria that has characteristic cell walls and unusual staining properties. AIDS patients are most commonly infected with an atypical form of tuberculosis bacterium called Mycobacterium avium inter-cellulare. This bacterium does not normally cause disease in healthy people, but in AIDS patients, it may cause tuberculosis-like disease in the lungs. The infection can also involve numerous other tissues, such as the bone marrow, and bacteria may be present in the blood at very high levels.
