Sensitivity tissues

Off-Shoot-O. The methyl esters of the Cg—C 2 fatty acids (40) are collectively sold under the name Off-Shoot-O and are closely related to 1-decanol, the fatty alcohol sold to control axillary shoots in tobacco. The material is a contact-type chemical used to pinch ornamental plants such as a2aleas, cotoneaster, juniper Juniperus sp. privet, rhamnus, and taxus (Taxus sp. sp.). As a result of treatment the shmbs become bushier. The mode of action is by plasmolysis of the young, sensitive tissues. Therefore, appHcation timing may be critical. [Pg.426]

Baroreceptor. Specialized pressure-sensitive tissue located in carotid arteries. Nerve impulses proportional to arterial blood pressure are conducted from this tissue to the brain which in turn exerts control over the blood pressure. [Pg.450]

Tumors derived from hormone sensitive tissues may remain hormone dependent and are then amenable to therapeutic approaches with hormonal agents. These include hormones with opposing (apoptotic) action, hormone antagonists, and agents that inhibit hormone synthesis. [Pg.155]

Ibberson, M., M. Uldry, and B. Thorens. GLUTX1, a novel mammalian glucose transporter expressed in the central nervous system and insulin-sensitive tissues. J. Biol. Chem. 2000, 275, 4607-4612. [Pg.282]

Metformin is the only biguanide available in the United States. It enhances insulin sensitivity of both hepatic and peripheral (muscle) tissues. This allows for increased uptake of glucose into these insulin-sensitive tissues. Metformin consistently reduces A1C levels by 1.5% to 2%, FPG levels by 60 to 80 mg/dL, and retains the ability to reduce FPG levels when they are very high (>300 mg/dL). It reduces plasma triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol by 8% to 15% and modestly increases high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (2%). It does not induce hypoglycemia when used alone. [Pg.231]

The reaction in Equation (6.15) occurs readily in the lungs and eyes (the sensitive tissues of which are lined with water) to cause irreparable damage. Troops exposed to chlorine apparently experienced a particularly slow and nasty death. [Pg.243]

We have gained considerable knowledge in our laboratory of bronchoconstrictors in bract and dust. A comparison of rat bladder, colon, ileum and stomach sensitivity to 5-HT showed the stomach to be the most sensitive tissue to extracts as has been reported by others (62). [Pg.181]

Branchflower and Pohl (1981) postulated that this depletion might be associated with the potentiation of toxic effects from chloroform (CHCP) when coadministered with 2- hexanone, since depletion of hepatic GSH could allow more phosgene (COCI2) (the toxic oxidation product of chloroform) to react with sensitive tissue components. [Pg.30]

One of the principles of the use of hormones in oncology is based on the fact that the growth of tumors which occur in hormone-sensitive tissues may be inhibited by hormones with opposing actions, by hormone antagonists, or by agents that inhibit the synthesis of the stimulatory hormone. Other hormone treatments are based on less specific antimitotic effects. [Pg.457]

Cyproterone acetate is a progestational antiandrogen that blocks androgen receptor binding and suppresses androgen-sensitive tissues. It is available in a topical form in Europe for the treatment of hirsutism. [Pg.732]

Increases tone and amplitude of gastric contractions, relaxes the pyloric sphincter and the duodenal bulb, and increases peristalsis of the duodenum and jejunum, possibly by sensitizing tissues to the action of acetylcholine, resulting in accelerated gastric emptying and intestinal transit... [Pg.138]

It should also be noted that a profound physiological disturbance such as prolonged anoxia may result in irreversible pathological damage to sensitive tissue. There are many different types of response within this category with a variety of mechanisms, and it is beyond... [Pg.234]

Ding, S. 1995. Nonirritating emulsions for sensitive tissue. US Patent 5,474,979. [Pg.523]

A review of all the different basal concentrations found for glucose in rat brain is well beyond the scope of this chapter. However, these two brief examples highlight one of the constant concerns with microdialysis sampling in sensitive tissues such as the brain. The main concern is how the measurement event itself is actually affecting the analyte that is being measured. [Pg.183]

Utilize an in vivo bone marrow-thymus reconstitution model and mouse strains with arrested T-cell development to define the cellular and molecular targets of 2,3,7,8-TCDD that lead to thymic atrophy, and determine how these events relate to its overall action on the immune system. Dr. Gasiewicz is also determining what controls the functional activity of the Ah receptor, what target genes are affected in sensitive tissues, and how the modulated expression of these genes leads to the toxic responses observed after exposure to... [Pg.371]
