Processing ndProperties. Neoprene has a variety of uses, both in latex and dry mbber form. The uses of the latex for dipping and coating have already been indicated. The dry mbber can be handled in the usual equipment, ie, mbber mills and Banbury mixers, to prepare various compounds. In addition to its excellent solvent resistance, polychloroprene is also much more resistant to oxidation or ozone attack than natural mbber. It is also more resistant to chemicals and has the additional property of flame resistance from the chlorine atoms. It exhibits good resiUence at room temperature, but has poor low temperature properties (crystallization). An interesting feature is its high density (1.23) resulting from the presence of chlorine in the chain this increases the price on a volume basis. [Pg.470]

Equation (1) consists of various resistance terms. l/Kj a is the gas absorption resistance, while 1/ K,a corresponds to the maleic anhydride diffusion resistance and l/i k represents the chemical reaction resistance. The reaction rate data obtained under the reaction conditions of 250°C and 70 atm were plotted according to equation (1). A large proportion of the chlorine added to wastewater is consumed in oxidizing organic materials other than phenolic con-pounds. Thus, for example, in the work of Thompson and Dust cited above, the wastewater COD content averaged 20,400 mg/liter before and 10,400 mg/1 after treatment with chlorine at a rate of 2 g/liter. However, the OOD was further reduced to only 10,250 mg/liter upon the addition of 10 g/liter of additional chlorine. This result suggests that a portion of the organic content of the wastewater was resistant to chemical oxidation, as indicated above for phenolic compounds. [Pg.368]

Thermal stability. The degree to which a compound resists dissociation or other chemical alteration at elevated temperatures. There are indications that polymeric binders may protect films to some extent against oxidation by moist air in storage. A few tests on a fully-burnished soft film with an inorganic binder also showed no deterioration during extended storage in air at 70% relative humidity and 60°C. The reaction was carried out by dissolving gaseous HCl in a stirred vessel containing the alcohol. The resulting concentration-time data could be correlated with a rate equation half-order in alcohol concentration. Experimental studies to date indicate that there is little basic difference in the resistance to chemicals or swelling by fluids between compositions containing the different crosslink monomers.
