Resin Transfer Molding (RTM). Reinforcing fibers are distributed uniformly in the mold and the mold is closed. Liquid resin is injected into the mold until the excess comes out of the vents. The mold is pressed and heated, similarly to preform molding, until cure is complete.

Resin transfer molding In the resin transfer molding (RTM) process, a low viscosity resin is transferred into a closed mold containing all the appropriate reinforcements and inserts as a preform. The air is normally evacuated from the mold, allowing the use of low resin injection pressures and epoxy molds. Manhole covers, compressor casings, car doors, and propeller blades have all been manufactured by RTM.

SRIM is similar to RIM in its intensive resin mixing procedures and its reliance on fast resin reaction rates. It is also similar to resin transfer molding (RTM) (discussed later in this chapter) in employing preforms that are preplaced in the cavity of a compression mold to obtain optimum composite mechanical properties. The term structural is added to the term RIM to indicate the more highly reinforced nature of the composite components manufactured by SRIM. 

Resin transfer n. Resin transfer molding is a variation of matched-metal-die molding in which, after placing the preformed reinforcement in the heated mold, premixed, quick-curing resin is injected while the mold is closing or after it has closed. 

The major types of layup configuration include hand layup, automatic tape laydown, filament winding, resin transfer molding, and pultrusion. The configuration will depend on the type of reinforcement that is used (i.e., tape, tow, fabric, preform, chopped fiber, etc.) and whether or not it is impregnated with resin at the time of laying in the mold.

Occasionally, fibers or tows are inserted or laid into a shape as a preform, and the whole preform is subjected to the injection of the resin system under pressure, such as resin transfer molding (RTM) vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VaRTM) or even partial injection of the resin or part of the resin system, with the same qualified resin transfer molding (SqRTM) process. In every case, there is the real possibility of fibers moving under the influence of the injected resin, producing considerable doubt as to the final formal structure, position, or integrity of the fibers after molding.
