Chemistry Research Laboratory of Applied

William H. Walker was an associate of Noyes in the Chemistry Department. Walker, perhaps from close contact with the Research Laboratory of Physical Chemistry, saw the desirability for a Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry and founded a laboratory of this type in 1908. Walker assumed charge of Chemical Engineering in 1912 and held that position until 1920. [Pg.78]

The formation of a Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry where industry could have specific problems worked on by a team of experts, feculty members, and research associates or research assistants, for a fee. This idea was broadened later to include all departments at M.I.T. by formation of the Division of Industrial Cooperation. The name of the latter was changed later to the Division of Sponsored... [Pg.78]

One of Lewis strong interests was in combustion, kilns, and gas production. In the early 1920 s, Robert T. Haslam, who had joined the faculty after World War I, chose this part of Lewis interest as his area of specialization and began with Robert P. Russell of the Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry to assemble material for a book. Fuels and their Combustion, an authoritative volume. This field was so important that Haslam considered the possibility of either a separate chemical engineering division in this area or perhaps a separate course. Fuel and gas engineering did, in fact, maintain a separate identity for a period of several years, but returned to chemical engineering in 1932. [Pg.83]

Simultaneously with the re-establishment of the Practice School, the Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry, which had been established in 1908 by Walker, was reactivated under R. E. Wilson. The contracts it had with industry rapidly increased, making necessary a continuously increasing staff. Throughout its existence in the Chemical Engineering Department this laboratory directed a percentage of any profit to so-called pro bono publico work. (In the period 1925-1935, the standard contract with industry was for 300 per man per month if the research... [Pg.86]

The success of the Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry caused M.LT. to expand the concept to cover an Institute-wide organization, known originally as the Division of Industrial Cooperation, which played the same role for industry in general that the Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry played for the chemical industry. Walker, who founded this laboratory, could not have foreseen how important the Research Laboratory for Applied Chemistry would become in the structure of M.LT. [Pg.87]

William H. Walker (1869-1934) who brought to this discipline the respect it should enjoy within the engineering curriculum (12,13). After an M.S. in Chemistry at M.I.T. (1887) and a doctorate at the University of Leipzig with Ostwald (1890), Noyes established the Research Laboratory of Physical Chemistry in 1903. William Walker, who had received his doctorate in 1892 at the University of Gottingen with Otto Wallach (Nobel Prize 1910), saw the importance of such a laboratory in chemical research and established in 1908 the Research Laboratory of Applied Chemistry. [Pg.6]

After the War, Micklethwait worked briefly in the research laboratory of Boots Pure Drug Company and then returned to Swanley Horticultural College, where she taught until 1921, being Principal for her last year there. From then until 1927, she compiled the Index for the second edition of Thorpe s Dictionary of Applied Chemistry, the series co-edited by her friend, Whiteley. She died on 25 March 1950, aged 83 years. [Pg.125]
