There have been recognized specialists in the subject for some years now. Recently we have witnessed the rise of organized specialist research units linked to universities. Examples are the Research Centre for Economics and Health (CRES) at Pompeu Fabra University and the Health and Pharmaceuticals Social Studies Seminar at Carlos III University in Madrid.

Daniel Finn is a Professor of Social Policy at the University of Portsmouth. He has written extensively on the implementation of welfare to work programmes and the reform of the public employment service. Since 1997 he has been closely involved in analysing the British Government s welfare to work strategy, has acted as a special adviser for parliamentary committees, and has carried out research for British government departments, international organisations and independent foundations. Dr Eberhard Jochem is Professor Emeritus for Economics and Energy Economics at the Centre of Energy Policy and Economics (CEPE) at ETH Zurich, which he founded in 1999. He has been senior executive at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research (ISI), Karlsruhe, Germany, since 2000. He is an internationally acknowledged expert in technical, socioeconomic and policy research, mainly in the field of energy efficiency and climate change. 

Timothy Swanson is a Professor in the School of Public Policy, University College London, and a Programme Director at the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment.

Knapp s group have collaborated with the Centre for Human Sciences of the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency to evaluate the health economic considerations of PTSD (McCrone et al, in press). They have found that many factors need to be taken into account such as the prevention of PTSD, the discharge from the armed forces for military-related PTSD, and various treatment options. As yet, there are no clear estimates of the costs of treatment. 

Andrea Manca is Research Fellow at the Centre for Health Economics, University of York. His research interests lie in the investigation of methodological and theoretical issues related to two broad areas the application of modelling techniques to support the decisionmaking process in health care, and the use of analytical methods in the conduction of economic analysis of health care interventions. Andrea s applied work focuses on a number of different technologies in several clinical areas, including mental health.
