He received his B.S. (1945) and Ph.D. (1949) from the University of California, Los Angeles his research advisor was Professor Francis E. Blacet, who first identified the photolysis of N02 as the anthropogenic source of ozone in photochemical air pollution. From 1942 to 1945, he participated in laboratory and field studies in chemical warfare. He was on the faculty at Northwestern University from 1949 to 1954, leaving to join the faculty at the new University of California, Riverside, campus. He was a Guggenheim Fellow at University College, Oxford, in 1961 and a Research Fellow of Merton College, Oxford, in 1965.

This idea seems quite rudimentary today, but in 1961 I thought it was novel. My examiners judged it adequate, passed me, and told me to select a research advisor. When I found that Professor Gerhard L. Gloss was interested in carbene reactions, my choice was easily made. I began to study carbenic reactivity with him in 1961, [7] and have, at least in part, maintained an active interest in this research area ever since.

Paul W. Morgan was bom in West Chesterfield, NH on August 30, 1911. After graduating firom Tomaston (ME) High School, he enrolled in the University of Maine where he was awarded the B.S. degree in 1937. He received the Ph.D. degree from Ohio State University in 1940 and was a postdoctoral fellow at Ohio State where his research advisor was Professor M.W. Wolfrom.

As I have indicated, LeRoy was always available to answer questions, even if he had a lecture in the next 10 minutes. And our discussions often covered topics far afield. After I submitted my dissertation, LeRoy allowed me to continue to work on a post-doc basis, paying me twice the grad student rate. LeRoy was more than a research advisor he was simultaneously a colleague, a friend and a tme confidant who through example led you to excel.
