REPORTING OF TEST RESULTS

The requirements for consistent results are outlined in detail as far as accuracy of time interval, of readings, etc., in the procedure. Each report of test results should indicate the exact grade of material and its supplier, the specimen s method of manufacture, its original dimensions, type of test (tension, compression, or flexure), temperature of test, stress level, and interval of readings.

Many test attributes are amenable to studies of outcomes. Studies can address not only the test availability or nonavailability but also such attributes as the methodology used for a measurement, the analytical quality of test performance (e.g., precision), the turnaround time (as for POCT in the emergency department), and the method of reporting of test results (e.g., with or without extensive interpretation of the result).

Critical document reviewis done by the PLL team for documents provided by the government, including reports of unusual occurrences or events, safety reviews (including near-miss advisories), reports of nonconformance or non-compliance, reports of test results, audit surveillance inspection reports, daily and weekly operating reports, and campaign reports. The purpose of these reviews is to identity lessons that will be added to the PLL database, update the database as needed, introduce appropriate topics tor discussion at workshops and, if needed, recommend direct actions to secure further information. 

Most antimicrobial susceptibility tests used in the clinical laboratory are well characterized and have been standardized by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS). However, controversies still exist surrounding the exact test methods, interpretation and reporting of test results, and application of the results to the treatment of patients. Nevertheless, there are many investigations that show that the general antimicrobial susceptibility or resistance profile of an infecting organism correlates with clinical and/or microbiologic responses to therapy.

Thus, six correlation studies have been conducted with Salmonella, but only four of these studies have been adequately reported in the literature to date. The lists of carcinogens in these four studies are not mutually exclusive. In fact, 78 carcinogens appear in two or more of the lists of carcinogens in the four reported studies. This redundancy results from a duplication in both the testing of some carcinogens and the reporting of test results for others.
