Report correction

The general definition of a condensation reaction is a one that involves product formation by expulsion of water (or other small molecule) as a by-product. By this definition, activation and methylolation are also condensations. In more precise terms the chain-building process should be described as a condensation polymerization, however, in the jargon of the phenolics industry, the term condensation is usually reserved for the chain-building process. This terminology is not necessarily observed in the literature [88]. Many literature reports correctly refer to methylolation as a condensation reaction. The molecular weight development of the phenol alcohol adducts may also be classified as a step-polymerization.

Published data on methylaluminoxane isolated from toluene have shown a wide range of molecular weights (300-3000 amu, primarily using cryoscopic methods). Possible reasons for the irreproducibility were proposed by Beard, et al. (23), who showed that cryoscopic molecular weight measurements of commercially available methylaluminoxane are influenced by several variables, such as process oils, residual toluene (solvent) and TMAL content. Beard reported "corrected" cryoscopic molecular weights of 850, suggesting x in eq 16 to be 15. 

The comprehensive reports include a summary of the methods used, results obtained and the conclusions arrived at in all submitted studies. The manufacturer shall include in the submission a submission certificate certifying that all information contained in the submission are accurate and complete and that the sectional and comprehensive reports correctly represent the data in the submission. The certificate has to be signed by the senior executive officer (CAE or COO) and the senior medical or scientific officer of the manufacturer in Canada.

I cability of fluorescence to the direct determination of functionality in humic substances is apparent from those reviews. Figure 14 (from Plechanov et al., 1983) shows the fluorescence spectra of several aquatic humic and fulvic acids. The relatively well-defined structure typical of the spectra of simple molecules such as anthracene (Fig. 15) is absent from the humic acid spectra. Ewald et al. (1983) report corrected fluorescence spectra for humic substances, but these spectra provide no further insight into the functionality of these materials. 

We are now in a position to tidy up a number of points of terminology relating to the FID and spectrum. It is important to understand these in order to report correctly the parameters used to record a spectrum. 

Some variation in rate constants obtained by different research groups can be attributed to use of different references for the solubility of O2 in the solvents employed, or even to incorrect application of Bunsen or Ostwald coefficients in the calculation of [O2I. Since the atmospheric pressure, the temperature, and the degree of humidity when measurements were made in the presence of air are usually not reported, correction of the rate constants by application of uniform O2 concentrations is difficult. It will nonedteless be attempted when necessary, using a recently published critical and comprehensive compilation of Oj solubility data (16).
