Many non-Westem folk remedies used to treat diarrhea or other ailments may contain substantial amounts of lead. Examples of these include Alarcon, Ghasard, Alkohl, Greta, Azarcon, Liga, Bali Goli, Pay-loo-ah, Coral, and Rueda. In addition, an adult case of lead poisoning was recently attributed to an Asian remedy for menstrual cramps known as Koo Sar. The pills contained lead at levels as high as 12 ppm (CDC 1998). The source of the lead was thought to be in the red dye used to color the pills. 

Cold Remedies, Pain Relievers, Hay Fever Remedies, and Diet Pills... 

The symbolic importance of doctor-prescribed pill-taking as a kind of identity point of no return is powerfully illustrated by Sarah s case. Adults and adolescents alike are asking themselves questions such as, Should I take a pill for my headache, or drink chamomile herbal tea There are several scientific counterparts to this seemingly simple question, for example Are these both remedies Are they equally effective Is one healthier or less toxic than the other Can they be used together At this time, there is no comparative information on codeine versus alternative medicine (e.g., acupuncture) as effective treatments for pain, cough, and diarrhea.

By comparison, erectile dsyfunction (ED) is an example of how social dissatisfaction can be transformed into medical dysfunction and then remedied by a pill. On the one hand, it is certainly true that, in some cases, ED is the consequence of organic causes, including peripheral vascular diseases, hypertension, drug-side effects, hormonal imbalance, and diabetes. The MMAS suggests, for example, that 10 per cent of American males have complete inability to achieve erection of the penis (Feldman et al. 1994). But ED is primarily a socially constructed condition based on a socially constructed male "problem." In 1903, barbital with the brand name of Veronal was marketed as a sleeping pill. Before that time, remedies for insomnia included drinking alcohol or taking bromides, chloral hydrate, or opiates.

As Europe began its slow emergence from the Dark Ages in the sixteenth century, opium began to reappear in medical journals on the continent. A century later, an English apothecary named Thomas Sydenham introduced Sydenham s Laudanum, pills made from opium, sherry, and herbs. They were popular remedies for a variety of ills.

In 2002 the Medicines Safety Authority of the Ministry of Health in New Zealand (Medsafe) ordered the withdrawal of several traditional Chinese medicines sold as herbal remedies (4). The products included Guan Xin Su He capsules. Long Dan Xie Gan Wan Pills, and Zhiyuan Xinqinkeli sachets.

Oral administration, or swallowing, is the route with which you probably arc most familiar. Orally taken drugs usually are in the form of pills, capsules, powders, or liquids. Examples are the variety of headache medicines, cough syrups, and cold remedies available at any drugstore. Such accessible medications are virtually always prepared for oral administration because it usually is the safest, most convenient, and most economical way to administer a drug.
