REESE Program

The ACS played an active role in public outreach. For example, in January 1961, the ACS News Service released the first program in its Men and Molecules series, a 15-minute science documentary produced weekly and distributed free to radio stations. The series featured noted scientists discussing their research in terms that the public could understand. Its main goal was to increase the public s understanding of the value of research. By the end of 1975, 785 programs had been completed and broadcast by 525 radio stations in all states (Skolnik Reese, 1976). 

The retention time of a series of mixtures of nitrobenzene and deuterated nitrobenzene were determined by Scott and Reese and are shown plotted as points in figure (7). It is seen that close agreement is obtained between the experimental points and the theoretical curve. The procedure described is an interesting alternative for the analysis of mixtures of closely eluted solutes, to the difficult and tedious construction of columns of extremely high efficiencies. With great care and the use of modern sophisticated computer programs the required accuracy can be easily obtained, and it is suprising that this approach is not used more often. 

Muscle Mass A significant increase (10 to 22%) in high circumference was measured on Parastep users after 3 to 6 months of training at the University of Illinois/Michael Reese Hospital training program in Chicago [5]. 

Pressure Ulcers (Decubitus Ulcers) Almost all paraplegics suffer from decubitus ulcers. However, all but one patient at the author s FES program (at Michel Reese Hospital, Chicago), had no occurrence of a new ulcer while regularly using FES. Improved blood circulation at below the lesion is most likely the cause for this [27]. The exception was due to a cut from a sharp object.

Federal, state, and provincial regulations may mandate safety programs. The content of these programs vary considerably in specifics but generally consist of several steps that are designed to prevent accidents. Safety programs have been shovm to be effective in reducing numbers of accidents. For example, research conducted by the Lincoln Nebraska Safety Council in 1981 (Reese Eidson, 1999) surveyed over 140 national construction-related companies. The Council fovmd that companies with formal safety plans and established procedures had fewer accidents than companies wdthout plans and procedures. Table 1-1 (adapted from Reese Eidson, 1999) summarizes those results.
