An important feature of all gas ionization detectors is their dead or paralysis time, which has a direct bearing on their utility. Once initiated a voltage pulse takes several hundred microseconds to die away, and may be prolonged by the discharge of secondary electrons from the cathode as the argon ions are reduced. Until this first pulse is terminated the tube is dead to further radiations and the recorded count CM will be less than the true count CT. The very existence of these mummies provides clues as to the religion, philosophy, and technology of these ancient civilizations. Along with the surviving records, such as the Book of the Dead, which described the passage of the deceased into the afterlife, historians know something about ancient Egyptians and their beliefs. 

At first they feared the worst. A body embedded in glacial ice - what else could this be but the gruesome record of a climbing accident Or perhaps even, to judge from the apparent wound on the back of the dead man s head, something more sinister. Either way, Helmut and Erika Simon, hiking in the Alps along the border of Austria and Italy on 19 September 1991, were deeply disturbed by their discovery. 

The fingerprint diagram shown in Fig. 7.1 depicts gradual salinization with depth at the Amiaz 1 well, west of the Dead Sea (Mazor et al., 1969). Fresh water was encountered at a depth of 32 m, whereas saline water of the local Tverya-Noit group was found at a depth of 85 m. A practical consequence of this is that some fresh water may be abstracted from a depth of 30-40 m. The example of the Amiaz 1 well can be generalized in each area several water bodies may be passed by a drill. All of them should be documented in the driller s records, all should be measured in situ, and samples should be collected for laboratory measurements. 

The rate of adsorption /17 is determined with the help of Equation (2.80) from the experimental rate of introduction,/, of the adsorptive, the dead volumes Vc and VB and their temperatures Tc and TEl and the slope dp/dt. The only extra information needed is a continuous recording of the heat-flow 0 from the beginning to the end of the experiment. To obtain these data, a convenient procedure is described in the following steps. 

Because of counter dead time, the possibility exists that some particles will not be recorded since the counter will not produce pulses for them. Pulses will not be produced because the counter will be occupied with the formation of the signal generated by particles arriving earlier. The counting loss of particles is particularly important in the case of high counting rates. Obviously, the observed counting rate should be corrected for the loss of counts due to counter dead time. The rest of this section presents the method for correction as well as a method for the measurement of the dead time. 

For an input count rate l/tj, i.e. the reciprocal of the dead time, the recorded count rate is 50% of the input count rate. The recorded count rate for a 50% counting loss is sometimes defined as the maximum useful count rate ,... 

The TAC/ADC dead time starts with the stop of the TAG. The end of the dead time ean be at any time within one of the subsequent signal periods. Averaged over a large number of periods, the result is a step in the reeording probability and thus in the recorded waveform. The size of the distortion depends on the ratio of the eount rate to the signal repetition rate and can be estimated as follows. 

In all samples studied, of pyrite is the most depleted. The OM sulfur is on average 10%c heavier a very small amount of the sulfate minerals gypsum and anhydrite for the Nabi Musa location indicates evaporative conditions and sulfate closed system. Despite the same Senonian Ghareb Formation sedimentary rock for aU of the Dead Sea area samples studied, the values recorded for different sites show wide variability. This indicates that small differences in sub-basin conditions have a significant imprint on sulfur isotope distribution. 

Both geometries, however, suffer in that pulsing either the primary ion or the secondary ion beam limits the number of secondary ions of a specific m/q that can be recorded per analytical beam pulse. This is a direct result of the dead time effects/pulse pair resolution exhibited by detectors (see Section 4.2.4.2). In the case of Channel Plates (those most commonly used in TOF SIMS instruments), the pulse pair resolution approaches 10 ns, which is still greater than the primary ion pulse... 

Ease of Use The field has a very bad record of resuscitating dead code —code that has been modified so that some branches will never be executed. Too many of the software packages in current nse, both commercial and freeware, are very poor from the viewpoints of reliability, user friendliness, portability, and availability. Maintenance and improvement of codes is not well handled by the field in general. 

Use dead-time mode. The dead time is a specified period of time after each detected Doppler burst, during which further bmsts will be ignored. Setting the dead time equal to two times the integral time scale will ensure statistically independent samples, while the integral time scale itself can be estimated from a previous series of velocity samples, recorded with the dead-time feature switched off.
