Reciprocating compressors bearings

Chapter 3, which discussed various reciprocating compressors, stated that riiaii> reciprocators use a pressure-fed lubrication system for the frame bearings. This system is built into the crankcase in many applica tions. I he basics of these systems follow the fundamental criteria which will lie discussed with the fully separate system. The larger reciprocating compressors may use a separate frame lubrication system. 

A V-belt-driven, force-fed oil lubrication system is used on water-cooled compressors. Oil goes to both bearings and to several points in the cylinder. Ten times as much oil is recommended to lubricate the rotary cylinder as is required for the cylinder of a corresponding reciprocating compressor. The oil carried over with the gas to the line may be reduced 50 per cent with an oil separator on the discharge. Use of an aftercooler ahead of the separator permits removal of 85 to 90 per cent of the entrained oil. 

Horizontal reciprocating compressors (see Figure 44.10) should have X-Y data points on both the inboard and outboard main crankshaft bearings, if possible, to monitor the connecting rod or plunger frequencies and forces.

Society of Automotive Engineers standards cover specifications for highway and off-road vehicles Some SAE specifications may be used in chemical plant and refinery applications, e.g., bearing materials. SAE also administers the Aerospace Materials Specifications (AMS), which include procurement requirements for extreme quality aerospace materials. AMS products may be applicable for land based, highly stressed critical components such as reciprocating compressor shafts. 

Electrical systems are a collection of complex processes that generate steam, produce electricity, reduce electrical output, centralize local power distribution, and run electrically powered equipment. Lubrication systems provide a constant source of clean oil to pump and compressor bearings, gearboxes, steam turbines, and rotating or moving equipment. Hydraulic systems, which are designed to apply pressure on a confined liquid in order to perform work, are used to open and close valves, lift heavy objects, run hydraulic motors, and stop the rotation of a rotary or reciprocating device.

Carry out regular inspection of structural integrity of all load bearing and support columns/ beams (if heavy machinery is installed on upper floors). There is possibility of vibratory loads due to process units such as agitated reactors/crushers, compressors, grinders, big conveyors, and reciprocating pumps getting transmitted to such stmctural members. AU steel bars and members of support stmctures shall have corrosion-resistant paint.
