Reading aloud

We now turn to the problem of reading aloud, that is, how to read text and then speak what we have read.

Read aloud. Especially for the auditory learner, reading aloud can help aid in comprehension. Hearing mathematical information and formulas read aloud can clarify their meanings for you. 

Use the read-aloud technique for another essay you re working on or that you wrote for another purpose. What did you notice about your writing Do you like the way it sounds Does it convey the meaning(s) you intended ... 

Look again at the essay you read aloud at the end of Lesson 14. Identify the organizing principle, the topic sentences, and the transitions used throughout the essay. 

I judged the one to my right to be a servant by her clothes, her shriveled, weathered features, and her occupation, for she was presently mending a child s britches. The one on my left was dressed as a lady of means, small and plump, somewhat mousy, aged perhaps thirty. She held a book. I had heard her reading aloud as I crossed the anteroom. 

Gahn was a man of broad interests who often laid aside the Philosophical Transactions or his blow-pipe to read aloud, near the sewing-table in the next room, now a poem by Kellgren, Fianzen, Fru Lenngren, Leopold, or Voltaire, now a comedy by Molibre or Holberg or to exhibit a litde mechanical or optical masterpiece or to study the instruments for some household art and present a method of improving diem (44). 

An auditory learner, by contrast, likes oral directions. He may find written materials confusing or boring. He often talks to himself and may even whisper aloud when he reads. He likes being read aloud to. An auditory learner will want to say things aloud as he studies. He could even make tapes for himself and listen to them later. Oral repetition is an important study tool for him. Making up rhymes or other oral mnemonic devices will help him, and he may like to listen to music as he works. 

Usage note When reading equations aloud we often say, F equals m a. This, of course, says that the two things are mathematically equal in equations, and that one may replace the other. It is not saying that F is physically the same thing as ma. Perhaps equations were not meant to be read aloud, for the spoken word does not have the subtleties of meaning necessary for the task. 

Gold H1952 The proper study of mankind is man, American Journal of Medicine 12 619. The title is taken from An Essay on Man by Alexander Pope (English poet, 1688-1744) the whole passage is relevant to modem clinical pharmacology and drug therapy it is best read aloud whether the reader be alone or in company. 

The host collects all the papers from the group and shuffles them. He then numbers and reads aloud each definition (the whole batch is read through twice), while the other players listen, trying to discern the one correct definition among the fakes. 

Everyone writes down a vote (e.g., definition number 3) and, when all have voted, each person announces his vote to the group. People laugh at who fooled whom and how. The real definition is read aloud by the host. 

Note The answer to this prompt requires social interaction with the reader in explaining one s own feelings, attitude, bias, and experience. An extension to the writing might be reading aloud and then discussing several answers. 

The very best way to practice exploring themes, main ideas, inferences, details, and vocabulary in context—whether you are preparing for future standardized testing or facility in reading comprehension—is to discuss what you ve read. By the way, reading aloud to each other is a natural and pleasurable way to lead into talking about what you ve read. 

Reading aloud with expression, conveying the meaning and mood of a work (Harold recites Macbeth s dagger speech perfectly.)... 

Note Reports may be read aloud or shared in a group discussion, with positive critiques following readings. Reports may include visual aids, art, audio taping, or video taping. 

Notice that this is a deceptively simple, yet highly powerful, passage. The passage may be best absorbed when read aloud, in a slightly marching, monotonous tone. You and your learner might discuss how close to poetry the passage is and why (use of rhythm, alliteration, assonance, repetition of words, sounds, phrases, metaphor, and so on). 

Read Your Draft Aloud and Listen for Sound Patterns. The rhythm of your writing will become apparent when you read aloud. Reread example 1 above and listen to the effect of the preposition parade. For example, you may also discover that all your sentences are basically This is the house that Jack built sentences—all beginning with the and all verbs lacking any force. Reading aloud will make this painfully clear. It will also tell you if your sentences are too long or too short. 

Coherence is really concerned with the overall sense of your written text. Having read aloud and checked the sense of individual words and sentences as you go, you need to find out if the whole assignment is coherent and has a... 

Read aloud in order to check your grammar and punctuation for the ways in which they affect the meaning. 

Ask your librarian for audiotapes of books with the accompanying text. Listen to the tapes and read aloud along with them. Try to hear the rhythm of the language as well as the sound of the words.

The chemistry of these sbc groups of elements is made similar by the presence of occupied p-orbitals, which control much of the chemistry and material properties.
