Re-engineering

This example leads us to a very important observation. While pollution prevention may seem like the obvious thing to do, it is not always cost effective, and investments into re-engineering processes must be carefully scrutinized. In fact, in this example, we see environmental legislation that actually discourages investments into green technologies, which in itself is contrary to national policy under the Pollution Prevention Act. [Pg.353]

This brings us to what the real objectives behind P2 are about. Pollution prevention is a carefully plarmed investment aimed at reducing an enterprise s operating costs through the elimination of harmful pollution. A successful P2 activity is a win-win type of investment — that is, the company not only eliminates pollution at the source, but does so on the condition that, at the very least, the activity pays for itself and, more favorably, provides attractive financial returns. The re-engineering considered for the pollution reduction and/or elimination must meet a set of well-defined financial goals within the enterprise otherwise it is not a worthwhile P2 practice. [Pg.356]

The conventional analytical process is comprised of sampling — sample preparation —> analysis —> calculation —> approval of results — report — decision.93 The introduction of productivity measurements to focus attention on continuous improvement and improving the reliability of assays to eliminate re-analysis can aid in re-engineering the process for greater efficiency.93 Automation is another important aspect of improving efficiency.94 The rate-limiting steps in many industrial laboratories, however, may precede or... [Pg.25]

Other cases of non-detector noise occur when the noise is introduced after the detector. These are usually a result of limitations of the instrument and in principle could be reduced by re-engineering the instrument. Examples include power line pickup, and mechanical vibrations affecting a sensitive part (generically called microphonics ). The magnitude of these would also tend to be independent of the signal level. [Pg.224]

We will discuss the approaches augmenting the clinical activity of monoclonal antibody, especially focusing on Fey receptor re-engineered monoclonal antibody. A better understanding of how monoclonal antibody acts in vivo will lead to the development of new, more effective therapeutic strategies. [Pg.205]

Several adjustments were made to the formula and process to improve the com-pactibility of this product. The moisture specification was adjusted, additional dry binder was added to the formula, and the tooling design was re-engineered. [Pg.251]
