This problem, taken from Floudas (1995), involves the manufacture of a chemical C in process 1 that uses raw material B (see Figure E9.3a). B can either be purchased or manufactured via two processes, 2 or 3, both of which use chemical A as a raw material. Before actual data collection is carried out, the regulations for data calculation and balancing must be fixed and documented as necessary. Important items that may influence the results significantly and enter into a balance sheet in a variety of different ways include treatment of secondary raw materials, data on coupled and secondary products as well as application of allocation mles. 

In raw material data sheets there are usually no characteristics that indicate whether the resin is suitable for BM, or up to what limit an application is sensible. With increasing markets for these materials, more useful data sheets for all types of resins are becoming available.
