There are several flavors of the agile iterative process. The most popular ones are the Rational Unified Process (RUP) (Kruchten, 2003) and Extreme Programming (XP) (Beck, 2004). Other flavors include Scrum (Schwaber and Beedle, 2001), Evo, and Feature-Driven Development (Palmer and Felsing, 2002). Abstract. A new discipline. Usability Design, is introduced as an extension to Rational Unified Process (RUP). The aim is to make RUP more user-centred. The discipline springs out of best practices for user-centred design and contains activities that have been carefully tested. Five new roles are introduced to take responsibility for the different activities. An example is given to show the content of the workflow, the workflow details and the activities. The Usability Design discipline help projects to focus on usability and the users throughout the system development lifecycle. In the tutorial the participants will learn how to work with the new discipline within the RUP framework. The Rational Unified Process is a software engineering process [3] that significantly has contributed to the software development practice. Today, it is widely used and has contributed to creating a more unified view on software development. However, from a usability point of view the RUP has several drawbacks. Problems with the use of the process have been observed in several projects [2]. It does not provide the support needed to produce a usable system. In a study by Gulliksen, Goransson, Boivie, Blomkvist, Persson Cajander [1] the outcome of a project was compared with a list of principles for user-centred design. It shows how a project using RUP with clear intentions to apply a UCD approach ran into several problems that made it difficult to pursue with that approach. [Pg.714]

A possible solution approach is the usage of standards (e.g., the Rational Unified Process (RUP) SysML ) for platforms, data models, modeling languages, and tools in the development process. This works well, if the standard is defined in an early phase of the project and if all project partners adhere to the standard, however, it is hard to define and maintain standards for cross-domain engineering, and even harder or nearly impossible for a larger number of project partners to agree on a standard, which usually takes longer than the time horizon of the project (Kruchten 2000 Weilkiens 2008). [Pg.91]

The significance of theoretical studies as a mandatory prerequisite for the rational use of synthetic methods can be demonstrated by the story of the pericyclic reactions. The Diels-Alder reaction, a [4 -H 2] cycloaddition belonging to this class, was elaborated into a reliable synthetic method shortly after its discovery because its main properties were well-accounted for in the terms of a unified (albeit rather oversimplified) mechanism. On the other hand, the [2 -I- 2] cycloaddition of various alkenes, a reaction also known for many decades, stayed for a long time as a highly promising but little understood set of transformations.
