The definition of heavy oil is usually based on API gravity or viscosity, but the definition is quite arbitrary. Although there have been attempts to rationalize the definition based on viscosity, API gravity, and density (2,3), such definitions, based on physical properties, are inadequate, and a more precise definition would involve some reference to the recovery method. [Pg.351]

Solvent Recovery The largest current industrial use of pei vapo-ration is the treatment of mixed organic process streams that have become contaminated with small (10 percent) quantities of water. Pei vaporation becomes vei y attractive when dehydrating streams down to less than 1 percent water. The advantages result from the small operating costs relative to distillation and adsorption. Also, distillation is often impossible, since azeotropes commonly form in multicomponent organic/water mixtures. [Pg.2194]

Surprisingly, the 7t-system geometry in a substrate has a notable influence in the enzymatic aminolysis of esters. The reaction of diethyl fumarate with different amines or ammonia in the presence of CALB led to the corresponding trans-amidoesters with good isolated yields, but in the absence of enzyme, a high percentage of the corresponding Michael adduct is obtained (Scheme 7.9). Enzymatic aminolysis of diethyl maleate led to the recovery of the same a, P-unsaturated amidoester, diethyl fumarate, and diethyl maleate. The explanation of these results can be rationalized via a previous Michael/retro-Michael type isomerization of diethyl maleate to fumarate, before the enzymatic reaction takes place. In conclusion, diethylmaleate is not an adequate substrate for this enzymatic aminolysis reaction [23]. [Pg.177]

There is therefore extensive evidence that may be used to rationalize the occnrrence of bonnd residues in soils, and this phenomenon is of particnlar significance for agrochemicals. Snch processes influence not only their recovery by chemical procedures, but also their biological effect and their biodegradability (Calderbank 1989). The extent to which these principles are applicable to aquatic systems appears to have been established less frequently though it is plausible that comparable mechanisms exist in the environment. [Pg.208]

As recovery proceeds, the subject gradually begins to converse in a more rational and coherent fashion, hut his grasp of the situation is still impaired and he often makes paranoid misinterpretations. He may feel, for example, that someone is out to kill him or that his food is poisoned. He may wonder why he is under such scrutiny and why he is being heated like a... [Pg.47]

Some of the discrepancies in the reported recoveries of different solutes from various waters by different investigators who have used the same functional polymers from different manufacturers can be rationalized by considering the discussions of pore size and surface area. Even when the pore sizes and surface areas are specified, awareness of the uncertainty in their determination is needed. Two polymers having the same listed pore size and surface area can behave quite differently as accumulators of organic solutes surface area does not specify surface orientation for adsorption pore size is not uniform, so the quoted value is an average and experimentally uncertain number. [Pg.217]
