Clearly, Raman spectroscopy provides a wealth of information about the type and composition of polymeric fibers and films. In addition, it can determine the type and amount of additives or degradation in these fibers and films. However, the most important use of Raman spectroscopy of organic fibers and films is in the determination of their morphology, as already shown for silk and as discussed more fully in the next section.

Under Lespieau s directorship, the Ecole Normale laboratory was open to students in physics and mineralogy as well as chemistry.33 The primary research program was the synthesis and study of nonsaturated organic compounds, along with the application to hydrocarbons of physical methods like Raoulf s techniques. With his former student, Maurice Bourguel, Lespieau was one of the first people in France to apply Raman spectroscopy to organic analysis.34...

A different selection rule applies -there must be a change in the polarizability during the vibration -so that some bands which are IR inactive are Raman active, e.g. the IR inactive C=C stretch of acetylene is Raman active and appears at 2180 cm .The use of Raman spectroscopy in organic chemistry is rare so it will not be discussed any further here.
