Radiological Controls

Unlike many chemical hazards, radiological hazards can be easy to detect with highly sensitive, direct reading instruments. Radiological control personnel conduct surveys and post warning signs. 

Operations at hazardous waste activities worksites where use of a respirator due to potential radiological (as specified by Article 532 of the Draft DOE Radiological Control Technical Standard) or nonradio-logical exposure is recommended or required... 

All of the work is performed in a negative-pressure glove box or open-front hood in a radiological control area. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) is used, including a lab coat, booties, safety glasses, disposable sleeves, and gloves.

If the patient requires immediate attention, treat the patient first and worry about radiological controls when the patient s condition has stabilized. Rooms and medical staff can be decontaminated later.

Patients who continue to bleed despite the above measures require surgery (ligation or transection of varices) or placement of a stent between intrahepatic branches of the portal and (systemic) hepatic veins under radiological control. The latter is now the technique of choice for the 10-15% of patients with acute bleeding resistant to conventional treatment, and also for long-term management of patients who are difficult to help by other methods (see below).

Radiation Safety or Radiological Control Office. The industrial hygienist (IH) or chemical hygiene officer (CHO) is concerned with the overall safety and comfort of the laboratory workforce. The radiation safety officer (RSO) is concerned more specifically with radioactive materials. The IH/CHO and RSO staffs function under different laws and regulatory agencies, but have parallel responsibilities that organizationally may be either combined or separate. 

The DOE does not use the license concept, so there are no formal requirements to become a Radiological Control Manager (RCM)—the equivalent of an RSO. Regardless of title and regulatory mechanism, the RSO or RCM is responsible for implementing a safety program for the use and control of radioactive materials in the laboratory. Two systems for radiological control are required in the case of membrane plant for radioactive waste processing first, for process control, and second, for securing the staff and for avoiding the spread of contamination. The latter usually exists if the installation is located in nuclear power plant or some other nuclear center. Some security devices have to be applied in rooms where membrane plant will be placed. The lead shielding in places where increased radioactivity is expected should be installed in accordance with precise preliminary measuranents and dose estimations. 

In addition, the control room should remain habitable during all AOEs and DBAs for the duration of the events. Thus, the control room, lighting and ventilation system should have backup emergency power to ensure habitability for the duration of postulated accidents. The control rooms should also have adequate shielding to ensure that no operator is exposed to more than the Radiological Control Manual limits for the duration of the accident.

Job responsibilities of the Radiological Control Technician (RCT) Involve monitoring the radiological environment in the HCF and advising workers of radiological conditions and the status of radiological protection/protective measures. 

Generally, the staff represented by these individuals will be supplemented by additional HCF personnel. These additional personnel will be adequate to respond to all anticipated upset conditions. There are no emergency conditions for which HCF personnel will be required to perform emergency operations. Initiaily, HCF operations will be limited to a single day shift. As the need presents itself, additional operations, production, and radiological control personnel will be added to support multiple shift operations. 

Area radiological control technicians monitor the fixed radiation monitor systems and use portable hand held gamma monitors to verify that safe conditions exist at key points in the process. ...
