Acute bleeding

Estrogen is the recommended treatment for managing acute bleeding episodes because it promotes endometrial growth and stabilization.11 Following its initial use for controlling acute bleeding episodes, it is necessary to continue therapy to prevent future occurrences. The use of OCs fulfills this role. [Pg.760]

Efficacy Alleviation of acute bleeding when present ovulation and subsequent pregnancy in women desiring this reduced risk of developing the long-term complications of, for example, PCOS (e.g., diabetes and cardiovascular disease) improved quality of life. [Pg.763]

Assess the risk for variceal bleeding and begin pharmacologic prophylaxis where indicated, reserving endoscopic therapy for high-risk patients or acute bleeding episodes. [Pg.255]

Endoscopy, vasoactive drug endoscopy, CBC CBC, evidence of heart rate and portal pressure Acute control acute bleed. [Pg.261]

Active bleeding. Acutely bleeding varices can be treated by injection sclerotherapy, by tamponade and by infusion systemically of vasopressin analogues or octreotide (which reduce variceal pressure). Results of controlled trials generally reflect efficacy in oesophageal rather than gastric variceal disease, which form a minority of cases, and can be more difficult to manage. [Pg.624]

Acute bleeding PO, IV Infusion 4-5g over first hr then or until bleeding is controlled. Maximum 30 g/24 hr. [Pg.52]

HypercalciuriaTypel Acute bleeding PO Initially, 15 g/day(5g with each meal). Decrease dosage to lOg/daywhen urinary calcium is less than 150 mg/day. [Pg.234]

G. Other applications NovoSeven may be effective for acute bleeding or hemostasis during surgery. In one study NovoSeven reversed the effects of the oral anticoagulant acenocoumarol on the prothrombin time and International Normalized Ratio (INR) in healthy volunteers, without evidence of systemic coagulation. It may also transiently correct elevated prothrombin time in patients with cirrhosis-induced coagulopathy. [Pg.147]

Since acute bleeding is unexpected, the formula is prepared and kept for emergency use. [Pg.199]

This formula is used to cool the blood and stop bleeding. It is used for acute bleeding in any part of the body. The cause is internal heat, which injures the blood vessels and pushes blood moving upwards and leaving its normal pathway. [Pg.291]

In severe cases of anaemia, or with ongoing blood loss, a blood transfusion may be necessary. Blood transfusions for anaemia are generally to be avoided due to adverse clinical outcomes, but in severe, acute bleeding, transfusions of donated blood are often lifesaving. [Pg.181]

Patients who continue to bleed despite the above measures require surgery (ligation or transection of varices) or placement of a stent between intrahepatic branches of the portal and (systemic) hepatic veins under radiological control. The latter is now the technique of choice for the 10-15% of patients with acute bleeding resistant to conventional treatment, and also for long-term management of patients who are difficult to help by other methods (see below). [Pg.655]

First marketed in the United States in 1996,recombinant factor IX is produced in Chinese hamster ovary cells transfected with the factor IX gene. Blood and plasma products are not used to produce recombinant factor IX nor to stabilize the final product thus recombinant factor IX has an excellent viral safety profile. Clinical trials have shown the product to be safe and efficacious in the treatment of acute bleeding episodes and in the management of bleeding associated with surgical procedures. Although the half-life of recombinant factor IX is similar to that of the plasma-derived products, recovery is approximately 28% lower. As a result, doses of recombinant factor IX concentrate must be higher than those of plasma-derived products to achieve equivalent plasma levels. Because individual pharmacokinetics may vary, recovery and survival studies should be performed to determine optimal treatment. Recombinant factor IX is often considered the treatment of choice for hemophilia B. [Pg.1841]

Intravenous pantoprazole or lansoprazole clearly is the preferred therapy in patients with acute bleeding ulcers. The theoretical benefit of maximal acid suppression in this setting is to accelerate healing of the underlying ulcer. In addition, a higher gastric pH enhances clot formation and retards clot dissolution. [Pg.630]
