Quiescence

After this, there was a long period of quiescence, broken by a new bout of innovation in the 1990s. Thermoelectric efficiency depends on physical parameters through a dimensionless of merit, ZT, where Z = S lKp. Here S is the Seebeck... [Pg.278]

Once the skeleton is formed, continual remodelling of bone tissue maintains structural integrity and creates more orderly tissue structures. Remodelling involves coupled resorption and formation on all bone surfaces in a well-defined sequence of events. The remodelling sequence has been described as activation of the surface, resorption by osteoclasts, reversal, formation by osteoblasts, and return to quiescence of the surface. In... [Pg.118]

Dyson 1999). Oogenesis in the absence of RBF1 appears to be normal as does the embryonic proliferation. In the case of the embryonic epidermis, cells are also known to exit from the cell cycle at the appropriate developmental stage. But some cells have problems maintaining quiescence. They turn on cyclin E expression, they progress through another S phase, but they do not seem to complete this extra cell cycle with a division. [Pg.56]

It is well accepted that MDMA produces 5-HT depletions in rat CNS, but much less attention has been devoted to the effects of MDMA on established markers of neurotoxicity such as cell death, silver-positive staining, and reactive gliosis. Support for the hypothesis of MDMA-induced axotomy relies heavily on immunohistochemical analysis of 5-HT levels, which could produce misleading results if not validated by other methods. For example, MDMA-induced loss of 5-HT could be due to persistent adaptive changes in gene expression or protein function, reflecting a state of metabolic quiescence rather than neurotoxic damage. Table 7.3 summarizes the effects of MDMA on hallmark measures of neurotoxicity. [Pg.127]

Fig. 4. The normal nocturnal migrating motor complex (MMC) recorded in the duodenum (upper tracing) and proximal jejunum (lower tracing) of a 91-year-old healthy woman. A short period is shown in high resolution in the lower panel. Phase III is preceded by phase II with some contractile activity, usually limited during sleep, and succeeded by contractile quiescence, phase I. The sequence of phase III-I-II-III constitutes one MMC cycle, and recurs during fasting (modified with permission from Husebye and Engedal [79]). Fig. 4. However, one must be careful because in an LMXB the optical emission from the accretion disk (whether in the outer, cool regions or as reprocessed X-ray emission) can outshine the companion by a large factor. This makes spectral lines difficult to measure and also complicates the ellipsoidal light curve technique. The ideal systems to study are therefore transient systems, which undergo periods of active mass transfer (often for a few weeks to a few months) before lapsing into quiescence, where there is little to no mass transfer. During quiescence, the companion is still distorted by the gravity of the neutron star, hence the flux variations still occur, but without any contamination by the accretion disk. There is a relatively new approach similar to this that... [Pg.33]
