Silicate production quartz sand

Crystalline Silica. Quartz sand is of course the principal raw material for the production of glass (qv). Cristobalite and 3-quartz are used in glass ceramics (qv), ie, ceramics produced by the controlled crystallization of glass. Silica is a main constituent of ceramics (qv). For example, refractory silica brick containing small amounts of A O is used as roof brick for open-hearth furnaces at temperatures >1600° C (see Refractories). Silica sand or flour (ground quartz) is the raw material for soluble silicates, such as sodium silicate, which is consistently ranked as one of the top 50 U.S. industrial chemicals (98) (see Silicon compounds, synthetic inorganic silicates). 

The manufacturing process sequence to crystalline layered sodium disilicate may start with the production of sodium silicate solution of a Si02 Na20 ratio of 2 by the hydrothermal process (see Table 22.1 and Figure 22.11). Quartz sand is reacted at temperatures of 180-240 C with sodium hydroxide solution of 50 wt% strength. The reaction can be performed in a nickel-clad autoclave, which is equipped with a stirring device and heated by injection of steam. The reaction solution is filtrated after addition of perlite as the filter aid. The 45 wt% solids content of the final liquor was realized by dilution with water [21,49,51,95],... 

Silicon Dioxide occurs in nature as agate, amethyst, chalcedony, flint, quartz, sand, and tridymite. Silicon dioxide is obtained by acid precipitation from a sodium silicate solution to yield veiy fine particles. If silicon dioxide is obtained by the addition of sodium silicate to a mineral acid, the product is termed a silica gel. The pharmaceutical industry uses colloidal silicon dioxide, which is a submicroscopic fumed silica prepared by the vapor phase hydrolysis of a silica compound, such as silicon tetrachloride. Other names for colloidal silicon dioxide include light anhydrous silicic acid, silicic anhydride, and silicon dioxide fumed. Colloidal Silicon Dioxide NF must meet the following standards ... 

The fibrous glass used for insulation materials does not require starting materials of high purity. Beach sand, which consists largely of the mineral quartz, is easily obtainable and quite inexpensive. Alternatively, silicate slags or waste rock from mining can be melted and processed to create the products called rock-, slag-, and mineral-wool. Such materials are used for insulation. Silica, the main component of silicates, is widely used as mentioned earlier. In its crystalline and noncrystalline polymorphs, silica is used industrially as a raw material for glasses, ceramics, foundry molds, in the production of silicon, and more recently in technical applications such as quartz oscillators and optical waveguides for longdistance telecommunications. Of the crystalline forms, only a-quartz is commonly used as sand or as natural and synthetic single crystals. Cristobalite is often utilized as the synthetic phase in glass-ceramics.
