In the ordinary process the slag is allowed to flow off continuously. It then shows a diminution in phosphoric and silicic anhydrides and an increase in lime and total iron as the carbon and phosphorus in the metal diminish say from 1 77 and 1-30 per cent, respectively to 0-09 and 0-023 per cent, (see Table II.). [Pg.217]

Discussion Various silicic acids are known, which may be regarded as hydrates of silicon dioxide. Unlike the cases which have already been studied, these acids can not be prepared by the action of the anhydride on water, because silicic anhydride is extremely insoluble. They may be formed, however, by the double decomposition between, a silicate and an acid, the particular silicic acid produced being dependent on the substances used, and on their concentration and temperature. The fully hydrated orthosilicic acid, H4Si04, is a jelly, which can be completely dehydrated upon heating. [Pg.201]

Silicon Dioxide occurs in nature as agate, amethyst, chalcedony, flint, quartz, sand, and tridymite. Silicon dioxide is obtained by acid precipitation from a sodium silicate solution to yield veiy fine particles. If silicon dioxide is obtained by the addition of sodium silicate to a mineral acid, the product is termed a silica gel. The pharmaceutical industry uses colloidal silicon dioxide, which is a submicroscopic fumed silica prepared by the vapor phase hydrolysis of a silica compound, such as silicon tetrachloride. Other names for colloidal silicon dioxide include light anhydrous silicic acid, silicic anhydride, and silicon dioxide fumed. Colloidal Silicon Dioxide NF must meet the following standards ... [Pg.428]
