During the industrial age, COz concentration in the ambient air increased from 280 to 360 ppm, and some predict that it could rise to 550 ppm if the use of fossil fuels continues. In addition to monitoring the atmosphere, air-quality-related measurements can also be used in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to monitor the return air quality from occupied spaces. COz is also measured at emission points because some combustion equipment regulations limit, or probably will limit, allowable discharges.

People in treatment often begin to notice improvement in quality-of-life issues as well. You may begin to notice that you are not as irritable, and that your patience is returning. You also may notice that your positive emotions come back if they have been blunted over time, or you may notice that you are not feeling like you are on an emotional rollercoaster as often. Most people notice after successful treatment that emotions begin to stabilize. And if they do not, then it may be a sign that other types of therapy may be needed, perhaps related to another condition that escaped diagnosis before. 

Returning the attention to the developed world, Fig. 19.5 shows selected indicators of the emission of NO in the EU15 countries, the US air quality index and the violation of NO concentration standards in Japan for all emission sources in relation to 1996 values. There is no air quality indicator covering all EU member states, but... 

In practice, most lifetime prediction is based on service experience. Depending on the industry concerned, this can take the form of planned examination of components at the end of their service life or be limited to the explanation of warranty returns. Experience with polymers is now sufficiently long for service experience to be a prime source of information for components with lifetimes of up to 35 years. The construction industry provides a good example of systematic listing of component lifetimes, related to minimum quality levels and modified according to the service conditions. The electrical industry applies statistical methods to life components and predict failures. This, however, strays into the general field of engineering component lifetimes. In this book we are concerned with materials rather than components. 

Good communication with the investment community is essential for a company that wishes to increase its market value. Our analysis of a sample of German companies found a significant correlation between the quality of investor relations (judged by the quahty of annual reports, analyst conferences and other investor events) and shareholder returns. The sample covered a broad spread of industries and included several chemical companies. 

The goals of therapy for patieuts experieuciug exacerbatious of COPD are (1) prevention of hospitalization or reduction in hospital stay, (2) prevention of acute respiratory failure and death, and (3) resolution of exacerbation symptoms and a return to baseline clinical status and quality of life. Antimicrobial therapy is indicated in the presence of selected symptoms. Since the frequency and severity of exacerbations are closely related to each patient s overall health status, all patients should receive optimal chronic treatment, including smoking cessation, appropriate pharmacologic therapy, and preventative therapy such as vaccinations. 

In this chapter (and in the prior chapter on the Fourier transform) we ve seen that lots of interesting information can be gleaned by transforming waveforms into the frequency domain. The appearance of a spectral plot can often be directly related to the sonic quality of the auditory experience of hearing that sound. In future chapters, we will return to the spectrum often to observe characteristics of sounds and the vibrations of physical systems.
