Quality improvement impact

The impact of a knowledge-based application may appear in many ways improved competitive position, quality improvement, improvement in efficiency, cost reduction, and reduction in downtime, to name a few. Some of these benefits may be hard to quantify others may not be quantifiable at all. For example, the actual benefit derived from a diagnostic advisory system may not be apparent if the process behaves normally. To quantify the benefits, a careful post-audit may have to be done, taking into account the number of faults averted, and comparing the frequency of faults before and after implementation.

Another area where improved air quality has impacted on sulfur use is in agriculture. As sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased, sulfur content of soils has also decreased. Sulfur, recognized as the fourth most important plant nutrient, is necessary for the most efficient use of other nutrients and optimum plant growth. Because many soils are becoming sulfur-deficient, a demand for sulfur-containing fertilizers has been created. Farmers must therefore apply a nutrient that previously was freely available through atmospheric deposition and low grade fertilizers. 

Quality is an essential component of competent, professional pharmacy practice. Increasing quality can have many beneficial effects on any practice, such as minimizing rework and increasing productivity. Many quality improvement changes are simple and can be implemented quickly but may have a large impact on the quality of patient care.

Pharmaceutical outcome data are also used to improve the quality of care, identify potential problems, and improve patient outcomes. These data are often used within a continuous quality improvement (CQI) cycle, where rate-based performance measures are tracked over time and used in conjunction with control charts to show changes in quality and assess the impact of programs or changes in process. Information can be fed back to front line health care practitioners, areas for possible improvement identified, appropriate changes made, and reassessments initiated. 

Although cyanobacterial-derived off-flavors can occur in many aquatic animals and in aquaculture throughout the world, the only economic impact studies of such off-flavor problems have been in channel catfish aquaculture in the southeastern United States. Off-flavor catfish are held until flavor quality improves, and these delays in harvest result in economic losses from inventory management problems and increased production costs [57]. Based on off-flavor problem added costs [57-60], catfish producers may have lost as much as U.S.S60 million in 1998.
