Provide a level of confidence for a select portion of preliminary data, focus on specific pollutants and specific levels of concentration quickly, by using field screening methods and verifying 10% by more rigorous analytical methods and quality assurance. 

More focused projects concerned the development of methods for screening in situ, field measurements), as exemplified in Chapter 3.1. Other developments concerned emerging contaminants (Chapter 7.2) and analytical quality assurance (Chapter 8.1). Finally, links among ecological and chemical status, including monitoring elements, have also been studied in the framework of EU-funded research (see Chapter 1.3).

One analysis run takes 20 min, and the system is ready to measure the next sample after a total elapsed time of 30 min at the most. This means that the maximum capacity per day is 48 measurements, corresponding to a capacity limit of ca. 40 samples. The other 8 analytical runs are required for the quality assurance of the analysis. Based on 250 working days, this method shows that 10 000 drug screening measurements should be possible per year. 

Hence, when discussing drug screening , the book offers information not only about GC/MS analysis but also about other analytical methods. Appropriate methods of sample preparation and quality assurance in the analysis are also discussed, and information on epidemiology and pharmacology is provided, without which an efficient drug screening is impossible. 

A quality assurance method was developed for hydroxyl content. To maximize accuracy and precision, the white powder was milled in a Udy cyclone grinder, with a 1-mm screen and then packed into a standard closed cup. The calibration range of hydroxyl was 17 to 22%, with an SEE of 0.2%. An of 0.993 was obtained. A five-wavelength cahbration using 1734,1940, 2100, 2208, and 2270 nm was used. 

The test application of the screening method demonstrated that the approach is based on sound concepts and can be effectively used in plants. It can be considered a good method for the periodic safety review. It can also be used in a limited scope for review of the plant quality assurance programme, evaluation of plant modifications and evaluation of events or precursors. Because of the wide scope of the aspects reviewed, the approach can effectively support the questioning attitude as part of the plant safety culture. 

Chemical analyses of biodiesel may be accomplished through standard methods as recommended by ASTM and other organizations, but these measures do not determine all aspects of biodiesel chemistry (20, 21).
