Information on good agricultural practices of many important medicinal plant species is either not available or meager. This information is important in view of quality assurance and safety of the products derived from medicinal plant species. The WHO has developed guidelines for good agricultural and collection practices however, there is a need to develop country specific guidelines for such practices.

The Quality Assurance and Laboratory Inspection Section at DCLS consists of a staff of five, and is responsible for a number of functions in addition to its QA function. Quality, efficacy, and safety of a medicine are attributes to be planned and established throughout the production process. This concept is especially valid for the production of biologies to assure the fundamental characteristics of efficacy and safety to the patient in each vial of every lot. Every step of pharmaceutical manufacturing should follow high standards intended for production consistency and product quality. The principles defining these standards are described in the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) publications.
