Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) is a method for obtaining sequence and structural information by measurement of the mass-to-charge ratios of ionized molecules before and after dissociation reactions within a mass spectrometer which consists essentially of two mass spectrometers in tandem. In the first step, precursor ions are selected for further fragmentation by energy impact and interaction with a collision gas. The generated product ions can be analyzed by a second scan step. MS/MS measurements of peptides can be performed using electrospray or matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization in combination with triple quadruple, ion trap, quadrupole-TOF (time-of-flight), TOF-TOF or ion cyclotron resonance MS. Tandem... [Pg.1191]

Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. In the experiments, about 2 mg of sample was pyrolyzed at 900°C in flowing helium using a Chemical Data System (CDS) Platinum Coil Pyrolysis Probe controlled by a CDS Model 122 Pyroprobe in normal mode. Products were separated on a 12 meter fused capillary column with a cross-linked poly (dimethylsilicone) stationary phase. The GC column was temperature programmed from -50 to 300°C. Individual compounds were identified with a Hewlett Packard (HP) Model 5995C low resolution quadruple GC/MS System. Data acquisition and reduction were performed on the HP 100 E-series computer running revision E RTE-6/VM software. [Pg.547]

This system is a rapid-serial primary screen. It uses a probe to scan from sample to sample across a catalyst wafer, analyzing reaction products at each location via mass spectrometry and/or optical absorption [1, 2, 45, 46]. The mass spectrometer is a commercial quadruple system with a custom ionizer interface. The optical absorption cell is a custom device and uses the method of photo-thermal deflection (mirage) to measure very low levels of a specific analyte. [Pg.71]

Laser Desorption Ionization. A pulsed laser beam can be used to ionize samples for mass spectrometry. Because this method of ionization is pulsed, it must be used with either a time of flight or a Fourier transform mass spectrometer (Section 1.4.5). Two types of lasers have found widespread use A COz laser, which emits radiation in the far infrared region, and a frequency-quadrupled neodymium/yttriumaluminum-garnet (Nd/YAG) laser, which emits radiation in the UV region at 266 nm. Without matrix assistance, the method is limited to low molecular weight molecules (<2 kDa). [Pg.6]

Bis- -diketones have been demonstrated to be powerful ligands in the engineering of supramolecular architectures. Pikramenou and coworkers [53a] used two bis-P-diketones of l,3-bis(3-phenyl-3-oxopropanoyl)benzene (H2L ) and l,3-bis(3-phenyl-3-oxopropanoyl) 5-ethoxy-benzene (H2L ) to synthesize neutral homodimetallic complexes [Ln2(L )3] (Ln = Eu, Nd, Sm, Y, Gd) and [Ln2(L )3] (Ln = Eu, Nd) and also an anionic dinuclear lanthanide complex [Eu2(L )4] . The detailed studies by NMR, electrospray, and MALDI (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization) mass spectrometry, by addition of chiral Pirkle s reagent, revealed that [Ln2(L" )3] and [Eu2(L )4] (see Eigure 2.38) are chiral, and have triple- and quadruple-stranded supramolecular structures, respectively, with the latter being more strongly emissive than the former. [Pg.71]

Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is a modern and more sensitive variation of MS detection of bismuth. Bismuthine is generated in a hydride generator and swept by argon directly into the ICP unit. The ions are then introduced into the mass spectrometer. Optimization of the mass spectrometer, reagent, and gas flow parameters leads to a detection limit of 20ngL (IfQand 1993). Phillips etal. (2001) examined the safety aspects of colloidal bismuth subcitrate (CBS) quadruple therapy for Helicobacter pylori. These authors used ICP-MS to determine blood Bi levels in 34 patients receiving CBS quadruple therapy, with whole blood Bi levels being deter-... [Pg.674]

Lascr-microprt)be mass speciromelers arc used for the study of solid surfaces. Ablation of the surface is accomplished with a high-power, pulsed laser, usually a Nd-YAG laser. After frequency quadrupling, the Nd-YA(i laser can produce 266-nm radiation focused to a spot as small as 0.5 pm. The power density of the radiation within this spot can be as high as 10 to 10" W/cm On ablation of the surface a small fraction of the atoms arc ionized. The ions produced are accel eraied and then analyzed, usually by limc-of-nighi mass spectrometry. In some cases laser microprobes have been combined with quadrupole ion traps and with Fourier transform mas speciromelers. Laser-microprobe tandem mass speclromeiry is also reeeiv-... [Pg.604]
