Public safety and protection

The CWC prohibits the development, production, acquisition, stockpiling, retention, transfer, or use of chemical weapons. Article IV requires that signatories destroy chemical weapons and any special facilities for their manufacture within 10 years (by April 29, 2007). Destruction of chemical weapons is defined as a process by which chemicals are converted in an essentially irreversible way to a form unsuitable for production of chemical weapons, and which, in an irreversible manner, renders munitions and other devices unusable as such (Smithson, 1993). The method of destruction is determined by each country, but the manner of destruction must ensure public safety and protection of the environment. [Pg.20]

The ERP should identify equipment that can obviate or significantly lessen the impact of terrorist attacks or other intentional actions on the public health and protect the safety and supply of communities and individuals. The chemical facility should maintain an updated inventory of current equipment and repair parts for normal maintenance work. [Pg.142]

The federal district court ruled that the statute was not vague, because it addresses an understandable core of banned guns and adequately puts gun owners on notice that their weapon could be prohibited. The Court also ruled that the law did not violate anyone s equal protection rights any burden on those rights was acceptable because the rationality of the link between public safety and proscribing assault weapons is obvious. Finally, under the lesser standards protecting commercial speech under the First Amendment, no violation of free speech rights was found. [Pg.90]

Annual reports that contain well-developed and meaningful information will be an important tool for the Agency and the industry to assure postmarket safety and protect the public. When manufacturers prepare the type of analysis this guidance describes and provide this information to the FDA in annual reports, industry and the FDA will be better positioned to recognize and address possible safety signals. [Pg.308]

NFPA). An organization devoted to promoting knowledge of fire- protection methods. For many years its publication (the NFPA Handbook) has been the accepted standard for all matters relating to combustion and flammable materials, firefighting methods, safety, and protection of property. Its headquarters are at 1 Batterymarch Park, P.O. Box 9101, Quincy, MA 02269-9101. [Pg.876]

Reports on safety and protection in nuclear activities are issued in other series, in particular the IAEA Safety Reports Series, as informational publications. Safety Reports may describe good practices and give practical examples and detailed methods that can be used to meet safety requirements. They do not establish requirements or make recommendations. [Pg.76]

The BWR 90 standard plant design of ABB Atom represents an "evolution" of the design of its successllil predecessor, the BWR 75, with a number of design modifications, improvements and supplements that address new licensing requirements and aim at meeting utility needs for increased public safety, investment protection, lowered cost, and ease of operation and maintenance. [Pg.39]

A casual conversation with a layman about radioactive materials transportation is likely to focus on packaging durable enough to protect the integrity of the shipment, and on transportation practices that ensure public safety and security. These are, or course, important considerations in a radioactive material shipment. However, these are not the first priorities when planning a compliant shipment. [Pg.560]

Clearly defined goals and objectives are needed if corrosion tests are to produce results that affect materials selection, and methods of corrosion protection and corrosion control. Goals and objectives define test purpose and what is to be achieved. Economic considerations are always a factor in defining goals and objectives, along with other considerations (workforce, public safety, and environment). Figure 2 shows some of the quality criteria that affect plant economics in the CPI. The criteria have been grouped... [Pg.49]
