Public hostility

This combination of incompetence and accidents led to increasing public hostility towards chemical weapons. After all, it was argued, if a few pounds of nerve agent was sufficient to kill six thousand sheep, what would be the consequence of a full-scale accident ... [Pg.277]

The formation of the Ordnance Department resulted from four events following cessation of hostilities in 1784. In 1785, the Secretary of War was charged with taking into his care all military stores, equipment, and supplies of the US Army. Second, a Surveyor of Ordnance was authorized in 1789. Third, Congress provided for the erection and repair of magazines and arsenals, and for the establishment of national armories. Fourth, in 1795, a Purveyor of Public Supplies was appointed to conduct the procurement of all military and naval stores necessary for the service of the USA. Finally, the establishment of the Ordnance Department as a separate corps was effected by Congressional Act of 14 May 1812... [Pg.427]

The introduction of affinity by De Donder marks the birth of the Brussels school the first publication appeared around 1922, but it took some years to make these concepts more precise.4 What was the reaction of the scientific community When we go through the proceedings of the Belgian Royal Academy, we see that De Donder s work indeed aroused much local interest. Verschaffel from Ghent and Mund from Louvain were among the people who became active in this newborn nonequilibrium chemical thermodynamics. However, one has to say that elsewhere De Donder s approach met with skepticism and even with hostility. His introduction of affinity was thought of as merely a different notation. [Pg.46]

Another area of concern for the FDA relates to records sent over public networks, dial-up connections, or public phone lines, accessed through extemal/intemal web servers or by database servers. A number of security issues need to be considered in order to keep these records trustworthy. Intranets may face similar security issues if remote users connect to the central network resources through a local link to an Internet, even when password-protected access for the users is provided to just a small portion of a private network. These systems are considered by the agency as Open Systems (Part 11.30)4. For example, the Internet provides a convenient medium to connect to other networks, but it does not provide reliable security features, such as entity authentication, or protection from hostile users or software. [Pg.105]

Following public hearings in early 2004, the FDA issued a press release for a Public Health Advisory in regard to children and adults, in which it stated, The agency is also advising that these patients be observed for certain behaviors that are known to be associated with these drugs, such as, agitation, panic attacks, insomnia, irritability, hostility, impulsivity, akathisia (severe restlessness), hypomania, and mania. ... [Pg.120]

This is consistent with my testimony and publications, beginning with Toxic Psychiatry in 1991, in which I warned about both suicide and violence caused by SSRIs and with my book Medication Madness (in press), which will present dozens of case histories illustrating harm to self and to others induced by the SSRIs. The FDA continues to lag behind, however, mentioning hostility and aggression in the new labels as problems associated with SSRIs but without giving these dire outcomes sufficient emphasis. [Pg.126]

Language is not always neutral, and often contains powerful codes of permissible and impermissible behaviour. The constant reference in recent times to the risks posed to America by weapons of mass destruction may well be part of the pohtical-psychological strategy of making the use of nuclear weapons more palatable to domestic public opinion. But the effort to expand the role of nuclear weapons as a counter to the development or acquisition of WMD by US-hostile states could pose a threat to arms control, disarmament and non-prohferation. It is not clear... [Pg.2]

Two chemical companies executed leveraged recapitalizations in the 1980s. One was Union Carbide in 1985 when it faced a hostile bid from GAF. Carbide sold its Eveready Battery business and used the proceeds to buy back 55 percent of its shares at a price that GAF could not match. The other leveraged recapitalization was that of FMC in 1986, when it decided to return a large portion of its cash to public shareholders in a kind of public LBO. In the transaction, FMC s senior managers increased their equity stake in the company from 19 to 41 percent... [Pg.103]
