Proprietary processing aids

Many other proprietary process aids are available, but these should be tested first to determine any influence on scorch and/or cure rate. In addition, examine the uncured compound for decreased tack and any detrimental effects on adhesion to metal or other elastomers in a composite. 

During production of factice, other additives may be employed to lower the cost or buffer the pH, or adjust the processability. Calcium carbonate, process oils, and magnesium oxide buffer are some of the items that are added at relatively low levels to modify factice. Certain proprietary process aids may be added to improve processing characteristics. 

The application of direct digital control of fermentation processes began in the 1960 s. Since then, many corporations have developed computer-aided fermentation in both pilot and commercial plants. Unfortunately, these proprietary processes have almost never been published, due to corporate secrecy. Nevertheless, recent advances in computer and sensing technologies do provide us vwth a great deal of information on fermentation. This information can be used to design optimal and adaptive process controls.

Process aids are often used to reduce compound viscosity. There are many proprietary chemicals and mixtures available, but their selection should be made with great care and use made of them only after carefully controlled experiments. The quantities recommended by the suppliers of these materials are not necessarily going to give the desired result in every formulation, and may not work at all in the required way Peptisers provide a useful way of significantly reducing compound viscosity and aid the process of incorporation of the other ingredients.

Several suppliers sell stearate-coated grades of magnesium hydroxide for polyolefins and flexible PVC for wire and cable insulation. The coatings act as processing aids. Aminosilane surface treatment is favoured for connectors made of polyamides and some ethylene copolymers used in wire and cable. Dead Sea Periclase, a division of ICL, offers magnesium hydroxide with a proprietary coating for use in the TPOs that make roofing membranes. 

The introduction of computers to many companies allows proprietary software to be used for layout design. Spreadsheet, mathematical modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) techniques are available and greatly assist the design process, and have added to the resources available to planners. However, the traditional scale models described above will still be useful to present the result to management and shop floor personnel. 

Before reaching the point of complete data integration as given above, there are intermediary levels of data integration that are beneficial to better analysis of data from process analyzers. The best case would be to have all the data in a human readable form that is independent of the application data format. Over the years several attempts have been made to have a universal format for spectroscopic data, including JCAMP-DX and extensible markup language (XML). Because many instrument vendors use proprietary databases, and there is not a universal standard, the problem of multiple data formats persists. This has led to an entire business of data integration by third parties who aid in the transfer of data from one source to another, such as between instruments and the plant s distributed control system (DCS).
