The range of blends now available comprises a broad spectrum of materials superior in many respects, particularly heat deformation resistance, to the general purpose thermoplastics but at a lower price than the more heat-resistant materials such as the polycarbonates, polyphenylene sulphides and polysulphones. At the present time the materials that come closest to them in properties are the ABS/ polycarbonate blends. Some typical properties are given in Table 21.1. [Pg.590]

The quinoline antibiotics are relatively late arrivals on the antibiotic scene. The parent compound of this class of drugs is nalidixic acid. The downside of this molecule is the rapid development of resistance by pathogenic bacteria. A major step forward was the introduction of a single fluorine atom at a key position, to yield new molecules such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, andmoxifloxacin. Of these, levofloxacin and moxifloxacin have the best combinations of spectrum of action, potency, and pharmacokinetic properties. In time, they are likely to largely replace the current quinoline antibiotic of choice, ciprofloxacin. Since these molecules work by a different mechanism than do the p-lactams, organisms that become resistant to the latter are generally susceptible to the former. [Pg.326]

Since patients can rarely be relied upon to take (or be given) medication after fasting, and since itis common experience that doses are omitted more or less frequently the properties of doxycycline make it appear a promising successor to the first generation tetracyclines. Vitreous silica has many exceptional properties. Most are the expected result of vitreous silica being an extremely pure and strongly bonded glass. Inert to most common chemical agents, it has a high softening point, low thermal expansion, excellent thermal shock resistance, and an excellent optical transmission over a wide spectrum. Compared to other technical glasses, vitreous silica is one of the best thermal and electrical insulators and has one of the lowest indexes of refraction. [Pg.500]

Dolomite is an alternative mineral that is used in some regions in place of cal-cite for certain applications. Dolomite is a calcium magnesium carbonate (CaCOj.MgCOj) and occurs widely in nature. Although generally similar to cal-cite in properties, it is shghtly harder (3.5), denser (2.85) and more acid resistant. Production is similar to that for calcite,but miUing is more costly and it tends to only be available at the coarser end of the size spectrum. [Pg.94]
