Production and Economic Aspects. Aspirin is produced in the United States by The Dow Chemical Company, Rhc ne-Poulenc, and Norwich (a division of Proctor Gamble). Globally, Rhc ne-Poulenc has additional production faciHties in France and in Thailand. Bayer is self-suppHed from production units in Spain and Turkey over the years many small plants have been estabHshed around the world for regional or country supply. The aspirin market is increasingly globally suppHed. Aspirin is generally considered mature, and only population increases and new uses will affect its production and demand, which is thought to be of the order of 30—35,000 t for total world consumption. The May 1995 price was 8.30/kg (18). [Pg.291]

A commercially interesting low calorie fat has been produced from sucrose. Proctor Gamble has patented a mixture of penta- to octafatty acid ester derivatives of sucrose under the brand name Olestra. It was approved by the FDA in January 1996 for use as up to 100% replacement for the oil used in preparing savory snacks and biscuits. Olestra, a viscous, bland-tasting Hquid insoluble in water, has an appearance and color similar to refined edible vegetable oils. It is basically inert from a toxicity point of view as it is not metabolized or absorbed. It absorbs cholesterol (low density Hpoprotein) and removes certain fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). Hence, Olestra has to be supplemented with these vitamins. No standard LD q tests have been performed on Olestra however, several chronic and subchronic studies were performed at levels of 15% in the diet, and no evidence of toxicity was found. No threshold limit value (TLV), expressed as a maximum exposure per m of air, has been estabhshed, but it is estimated to be similar to that of an inert hpid material at 5 mg/m. ... [Pg.33]

After 20 years and more than 200 million in research and development, Proctor Gamble received permission from the FDA in 1996 to market its fat substitute Olestra in certain snack foods (e.g., potato chips, crackers, and cheese puffs). Olestra, technically a sucrose polyester, is not digestible, so it adds neither fat nor calories to food. However, Olestra can inhibit the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins and other nutrients. Therefore, all products containing Olestra must be labeled with the following information This product contains Olestra. Olestra inhibits the absorption of some vitamins and other nutrients. Vitamins A, D, E, and K have been added. Also, as a condition of approval, Proctor Gamble must monitor consumption and conduct studies on Olestra s long-term effects. [Pg.296]

The trisodium salt of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) adds another 74 million pounds (34 thousand tonnes) to the demand for aminopolycarboxylic chelants. Canada had been a major user of NTA. When Proctor Gamble stopped using NTA in Canadian detergents in 1996, the North American market became much... [Pg.330]

Several companies including Merck,23,24 Sanofi-Aventis,26,27 and Proctor Gamble,28 published papers that described research programs that targeted selective Kvl.5 blockers. In the sucrosolysis preparation of Olean , the generic name for Proctor Gamble Company s olestra, six to eight fatty acids, selected for functionality purposes, are positioned on sucrose. Although many noncaloric fats are limited or nondigestible, they are made from traditional vegetable oils. Akoh has summarized uses of these and similar products.134... [Pg.1619]

Laboratory Treatments. Colorfastness of the dyed wool samples was determined in aqueous and nonaqueous media. Colored samples were cut into 2- X 2-in. squares and sandwiched between multifiber fabrics (Test Fabrics) and undyed wool fabrics of the same dimensions. The fabrics were loosely sewn together by hand with white cotton thread. Two surfactants were chosen for the aqueous treatments Tergitol NPX, a nonionic ethoxylated nonylphenol (Union Carbide) and Orvus WA, an anionic sodium alkyl sulfate (Proctor Gamble). Solutions of 0.1% surfactant in distilled water were prepared. Tests were run in 250-mL Erlenmeyer flasks at a liquor-to-cloth ratio of 50 1. The flasks were placed in an Eberbach constant-temperature shaker bath adjusted to 30 °C and an agitation of 40 cycles/min. Treatment time was 1 h, after which the samples were opened and allowed to dry on blotter paper. This same procedure was used for the nonaqueous treatments. Commercial grade tetrachloroethylene (R. R. Street Co.) with and without 1% Aerosol OT, the anionic surfactant sodium sulfosuccinate (Aldrich Chemical) was selected. The treated samples were removed from the liquids, opened, and dried on blotter paper in a ventilated hood. [Pg.215]
