Ivory soap

The primary sample types used for field spiking were freshly prepared soapy distilled water (soapy water), air filter cassettes set up with 2.0 L/min. of air flow, and foil-backed patches of underwear cloth with a cover flap of coveralls cloth. The spiking solution was applied to the underwear material and the coveralls patch was then folded down to cover the spiked area. The patch was then exposed to air and sunlight for the duration of the trial in an area upwind from the trial site. The washwater samples for spiking consisted of 50-mL samples of soapy water prepared by putting on latex examination gloves and washing with Ivory soap in deionized water prior to the trial in the same way the operator would wash his hands.

Add a tablespoon of vinegar to one-half cup of water in a jar containing a piece of Ivory Soap. Attach the lid and shake. Do you see suds If you do not, it is because the vinegar contains positive ions which prevent soap molecules from dissolving in water.

Films were prepared by solvent casting a filtered solution, 10% solids by weight of the polymer in distilled A,N-dimethylformamide, onto glass plates. The plates were placed in a forced air draft oven at 75°C for 1 h to evaporate the solvent. The films were then dried in a vacuum desiccator at 0.1 mm mercury for 24 h to insure complete removal of any residual solvent. The glass plates were washed with 0.1% aqueous Ivory soap solution, then rinsed with deionized water and absolute ethanol prior to use.
