Documented efforts at cokemaking date from 1584 (34), and have seen various adaptations of conventional wood-charring methods to the production of coke including the eventual evolution of the beehive oven, which by the mid-nineteenth century had become the most common vessel for the coking of coal (2). The heat for the process was suppHed by burning the volatile matter released from the coal and, consequently, the carbonization would progress from the top of the bed to the base of the bed and the coke was retrieved from the side of the oven at process completion. [Pg.64]

For certain types of stochastic or random-variable problems, the sequence of events may be of particular importance. Statistical information about expected values or moments obtained from plant experimental data alone may not be sufficient to describe the process completely. In these cases, computet simulations with known statistical iaputs may be the only satisfactory way of providing the necessary information. These problems ate more likely to arise with discrete manufactuting systems or solids-handling systems rather than the continuous fluid-flow systems usually encountered ia chemical engineering studies. However, there ate numerous situations for such stochastic events or data ia process iadustries (7—10). [Pg.73]

Since the prediction of mutual diffusion coefficients from self-diffusion coefficients is not accurate enough to be used for modeling of chemical processes, complete data sets of mutual and self-diffusion coefficients are necessary and valuable. [Pg.165]

Slow reactions/processes, i.e. demand for laminar-flow post-processing, e.g. by delay-loop Fast reactions/processes, i.e. no demand for laminar-flow postprocessing, process completed within device... [Pg.9]

If wastewater streams start below the pinch concentration, then all of these streams bypass the treatment process completely. [Pg.612]

The use of ethanol-derived H2 for power generation through fuel cells suggests that the overall process completes the carbon cycle adding little or no net carbon to... [Pg.66]

Extent of removal required by downstream processing will also dictate the choice of process. Complete removal of H2S to prevent poisoning of downstream catalysts may require both a liquid absorption step and a solid-bed trace sulfur removal step, such as zinc oxide. [Pg.23]

Since deletion of residues 441-454 did not abolish processing completely (16) and since signal-induced phosphorylation that could not possibly involve residues 446-454 (see above) was reported to regulate pi 05 processing (13,14 see above), we predicted that an additional, signal-... [Pg.86]

The iQ automotive battery incorporates a micro-chip which monitors and controls the electrochemical process of the lead-acid battery, as well as its physical environmental and operating conditions. The thermal insulation of the battery also plays an important role. Neopolen P, a thermoplastic particle foam from BASF which can be processed completely without blowing agents, was chosen for this application. The foamed battery container calls for a solid frame that can be mounted onto the car body, and this frame is configured as a solid PP injection-moulded article, and fused to the container. [Pg.63]

During the follicular phase of the menstrual cycle, one or more follicles are prepared for ovulation. FSH and estrogens are the most important hormones for this developmental process. Complete follicular maturation cannot occur in the absence of LH. Rupture of a mature follicle follows the midcycle peak of LH and FSH by about 24 hours. In humans, usually one mature ovum is released per cycle. During the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and under the influence of LH, the ovarian granulosa cells of the corpus luteum become vacuolated and accumulate a yellow pigment called lutein. [Pg.706]

The degrees of freedom of any process constitute the number of independent variables that must be specified in order to define the process completely. Thus it is only possible to achieve the control of a process when all the degrees of freedom have been fixed. By considering the degrees of freedom involved in a process, it is possible to obtain a fuller understanding of the controllability of that process and... [Pg.573]

With 1,2-dibromoethane (run 4) under comparable conditions (run 2), somewhat poorer results are achieved with the same total yield (about 30%), the crude product contains nearly 40% of the starting oxime. As in the reaction with free acetylene (see Section II.C.l), the substitution of KOH by NaOH and LiOH (run 5,6) makes the process completely selective, but leads to a sharp drop in the yield of products and in the oxime conversion. [Pg.274]
