Process supervisor, primary

Primary responsibility for hazards evaluation must reside with the line supervisor directly responsibile for the process. Although a variety of other groups may support and contribute to hazards evaluation, responsibility for the selection of tests, evaluation of hazards, and implementation of appropriate controls rests with the process supervisor. 

Again the process engineer must spend a large amount of time observing the operations in the plant and talking with supervisors and operators. Besides verifying which steps are the bottlenecks, he must determine if some of the other units must also be modified. For instance, a filter may be able to process 20% more material, but still be inadequate for the proposed new rates. If only the primary bottlenecks were removed, then the plant could still produce only 18,000,000 lb I yr, since this is the maximum amount that can be put through the filter.

Scientific papers are the means by which research findings are communicated to others. They are published in journals with a wide circulation among academics and are peer reviewed by one or more referees before being accepted. It would be very unusual for an undergraduate to submit a paper on his/her own - this would normally be done in collaboration with your project supervisor and only then if your research has satisfied appropriate criteria. However, it is important to understand the process whereby a paper comes into being (Box 52.3), as this ean help you when interpreting the primary literature. 

The recognition of hazards is of primary importance. After workers and supervisors have been trained regarding hazard identification, their understanding of Occupational Safety and Health regulations will help identify jobs, equipment and machinery, areas, and industry processes that have exhibited hazards in the past. It will be your responsibility to identify the potential for hazards, or the existence of hazards within your workplace. Some tools used for identification have been presented in the form of hazard hunts, job hazard analysis, and job safety observations, while other techniques provide the means to prevent and control existing hazards. 

The primary goal of the information acquiring process about complexity factors was to use them as parameters for mathematical modeling of the relationship between air traffic characteristics and controller workload.
