Batch Process Simulation

Mathematically speaking, a process simulation model consists of a set of variables (stream flows, stream conditions and compositions, conditions of process equipment, etc) that can be equalities and inequalities. Simulation of steady-state processes assume that the values of all the variables are independent of time a mathematical model results in a set of algebraic equations. If, on the other hand, many of the variables were to be time dependent (m the case of simulation of batch processes, shutdowns and startups of plants, dynamic response to disturbances in a plant, etc), then the mathematical model would consist of a set of differential equations or a mixed set of differential and algebraic equations. [Pg.80]

Spreadsheet Applications. The types of appHcations handled with spreadsheets are a microcosm of the types of problems and situations handled with fuU-blown appHcation programs that are mn on microcomputers, minis, and mainframes and include engineering computations, process simulation, equipment design and rating, process optimization, reactor kinetics—design, cost estimation, feedback control, data analysis, and unsteady-state simulation (eg, batch distillation optimization). [Pg.84]

Process simulations can be aborted for any reason that, according to procedure, would also lead to discontinuation of a production batch. However, clear documentation of the event(s) that caused discontinuation of the process simulation shall be performed and maintained. [Pg.909]

All documents of batch numbers 001, 002, and 003 (process simulation of 24-hour duration) of media-fill study 1, study 2, and study 3 for aseptically filled A-ml vials were reviewed and found to meet the media-fill qualification requirements per current USP monograph and ISO 13408-1 1998 (E), including process simulation, environmental and personnel monitoring results. [Pg.940]

We study the separation of 77-hexane-ethyl acetate mixture by using acetonitrile as a heavy heterogeneous entrainer. The simulation of the process is performed with the batch process simulator ProSimBatch [10]. It enables to evaluate operational parameters like the entrainer amount that are not provided by the feasibility and synthesis analysis The column model consists of usual plate by plate Material balance, Equilibrium, Summation of fractions and Heat balance... [Pg.134]

The principle of integral process development [26] covers much more than just the optimization of a process. This approach begins with computer-aided decision procedures in the conception phase. Tools are available in which the process structure is suggested, for example should the process be a batch or a continuous operation The software tool for process synthesis PROSYN uses databases which include knowledge of experts, material data and calculation models for unit operations. Interfaces to process simulation tools such as ASPENPLUS and material databases are also supplied. PROSYN also delivers an economic evaluation of the future production process. [Pg.509]

Cuille and Reklaitis (1986) and Albet et al. (1991) used similar model to simulate batch reactive distillation process. Egly et al. (1979), Reuter et al. (1989), Mujtaba (1989) and Mujtaba and Macchietto (1992, 1997) used a modified version of this model based on constant molar holdup in their studies. Sorensen and Skogestad (1996c), Sorensen et al. (1996b), Balasubramhanya and Doyle III (2000) used simple models for studying control strategies in batch reactive distillation. [Pg.82]

Unsteady-state or dynamic simulation accounts for process transients, from an initial state to a final state. Dynamic models for complex chemical processes typically consist of large systems of ordinary differential equations and algebraic equations. Therefore, dynamic process simulation is computationally intensive. Dynamic simulators typically contain three units (i) thermodynamic and physical properties packages, (ii) unit operation models, (hi) numerical solvers. Dynamic simulation is used for batch process design and development, control strategy development, control system check-out, the optimization of plant operations, process reliability/availability/safety studies, process improvement, process start-up and shutdown. There are countless dynamic process simulators available on the market. One of them has the commercial name Hysis [2.3]. [Pg.25]

New Interventions. If during the conduct of a batch or a process simulation, the need for an intervention not previously evaluated in a process simulation may occur. The firm should allow for this eventuality and assess the intervention during its execution via supervisory observation. Further evaluation of the new intervention in a follow-up media fill should also be considered. [Pg.132]

For batch sizes smaller than 3000 units, process simulation tests should at least equal the batch size. No positives should be allowed due to the low sensitivity of small runs. [Pg.137]

Chromatographic batch reactors are employed to prepare instable reagents on the laboratory scale (Coca et al., 1993) and for the production of fine chemicals. These applications include the racemic resolution of amino acid esters (Kalbe, Hbcker, and Berndt, 1989), acid-catalyzed sucrose inversion (Lauer, 1980) and production of dextran (Zafar and Barker, 1988). Sardin, Schweich, and Viller-maux (1993) employed batch chromatographic reactors for different esterification reactions such as the esterification of acetic acid with ethanol and the transesterification of methylacetate. Falk and Seidel-Morgenstern (2002) have investigated the hydrolysis of methyl formate. Strohlein et al. (2006) measured the esterification of acrylic acid with methanol and validated the transport dispersive model for process simulation. [Pg.282]

Six major process simulators are widely used in the chemical process industries today. These are ASPEN PLUS, BATCH PLUS and HYSYS.Plant (Aspen Technology, Inc.), PRO/n (Simulation Sciences, Inc.), CHEMCAD (ChemStations, Inc.), and SUPERPRO DESIGNER (Intelligen, Inc.). In this book and the associated multimedia CD-ROM, coverage is provided of ASPEN PLUS and HYSYS.Plant, which are the two most widely used process simulators. It should be mentioned that once the principles of process simulation are understood, it is a relatively easy matter to switch from one simulator to another. [Pg.40]

In recent years, property information systems have become widely available in computer packages. Some are available on a stand-alone basis, such as PPDS2 (1997), while others are available within the chemical process simulators, such as ASPEN PLUS, HYSYS.Plant, PRO/n, CHEMCAD, BATCH PLUS, and SUPERPRO DESIGNER. Commonly, constants and parameters are stored for a few thousand chemical species, with programs provided to estimate the property values of mixtures, and determine the constants and parameters for species that are not in the data bank using estimation methods or the regression of experimental data. Virtually all of the property systems estimate the properties of mixtures of organic chemicals in the vapor and liquid phases. Methods are also provided for electrolytes and some solids, but these are less predictive and less accurate. [Pg.45]
