Instrumentation provides the various indications used to operate a nuclear facility. In some cases, operators record these indications for use in day-to-day operation of the facility. The information recorded helps the operator evaluate the current condition of the system and take actions if the conditions are not as expected. 

In each case where there is no unequivocal answer to a question in the flowcharts either further investigations or modifications to the process or equipment are required. The next step in the overall evaluation of the process is the determination of the consequences of possible deviations (also known as failures or upsets). If the evaluation of upsets results in process or equipment changes then the normal operation evaluation needs to be revalidated.

It should be apparent that the APR is a meaningful compilation of myriad critical data, records, and reports intended to provide quality management with a tool to evaluate the quality status of manufactured products. Handling unexpected trends becomes more manageable when there is a comprehensive APR process fully installed and operational. If the problem under consideration is high noise radiation, an operational evaluation should be made to determine both the frequencies and magnitudes of the noise being radiated and the source of radiation.
