Process pipelines

The necessity to clean these process pipelines varies from desirable to imperative, and the frequency of cleaning may range from weekly to annually or less often.

Eor 1-D sampling, one dimension in space dominates the lot completely as all increments extend fully over the other two physical dimensions, and there is a natural linear order between increments. Conveyor belts and process pipelines transporting a material flux are the two most important examples of 1-D lots.

The transmission function covers transport of the processed pipeline quality gas from the gas-processing plant to major markets. About two-thirds of U.S. marketed gas production reaches the ultimate consumer through a network of some 250,000 miles of pipelines. Other deliveries may be made directly to industrial consumers or to city distribution systems.

To complete an entire assay, a well-equipped laboratory and significant technical expertise are commonly required, with intervention at several stages of the processing pipeline to manipulate samples and/or reagents. In addition, the total time required for sample processing can be several hours to several days. 

MS has received significant attention and has spawned extensive research efforts resulting in numerous publications. Detailed information on this aspect of the proteome processing pipeline is beyond the scope of this chapter. For more information on this topical area, the reader is referred to a recent review [115]. 

The material of construction for reactors, process vessels, heat exchanger tubes, and process pipelines can be similarly chosen from carbon steel, suitable grades of stainless steels, Teflon-lined steel, fibreglass, polypropylene, glass, etc., after laboratory tests at operating conditions to confirm suitability (for minimising chances of contamination).

The feed vessel needs to be stirred to ensure that a uniform sample is supplied to the decanter, unless one can be sure that the contents are uniform and no settlement will occur over the period of the test work. Often the vessel will be the process plant itself and all that is needed is a tee in the process pipeline.
