From a study of literature, it has been found that scientists from Okayama University, Japan developed a dynamic model to utilize FTA for batch process. According to the paper [6], batch processes are divided into several safety objects linked to operation level. Dynamic simulation and fault propagation models are generated to evaluate safety objects. With the help of this model, FTA method using house event-time, an event expected to happen, can be developed for calculating the probability of failures. The time-dependent failures can be considered as unavailability of safety objects that can lead to accidents in plants. The rank of safety object performance index (PI) can be estimated using importance measures. PI shows the prioritization of safety objects that should be investigated for safety improvement in the plants. [Pg.422]

Pi/i has been selected as a basis for the evaluation of the performance index since it can be determined a priori and without any previous knowledge of the measurements. The parameters required for its computation are R, Q and Po- The measurement error covariance R is given by the quality of the sensors while the process noise covariance Q is generally more difficult to determine because one does not have the ability to directly observe the process. LSPR-based sensitivity enhancement using surface-relief nanostructures has been confirmed experimentally in a few smdies to date. In the experiments conducted by Byun et al. [26], ethanol-water mixture at varied ethanol concentration was used to estimate the sensitivity enhancement by periodic nanowires atA = 200 nm and 500 nm respectively as 44% and 31% over conventional structures, as shown in Fig. 7. Note that the sensitivity enhancement for bulk index measurement is relatively limited compared to layered bio-molecular interactions, because of reduced index contrast against ambience. The chapter is organized as follows In section 2, we first review basic results on I/O-controllability of linear systems. In section 3, a new t)fpe of I/O-controllability index is introduced, the Robust Performance Number. In section 4, I/O-controllability analysis by optimization is presented. Sections 5 and 6 contain two case studies an air separation plant and a reactive distillation column where these tools are applied to select the best control structure and quantify the process I/O-controllability. The evaluations of the control structures are validated by simulations with low order controllers which can easily be obtained from the analysis, in particular from the computed or estimated attainable performance of the chosen structure, using the procedure described in [9, 42, 29]. So the construction of practically relevant controllers of minimal complexity is seamlessly integrated with the analysis. [Pg.432]
