Problems, late

Your brother had some double vision problems lately and has felt very rired. Your family physician sent him to a neurologist w ho scheduled several tests. On follow up, the neurologist says that your brother has optic neuritis that may potentially be associated with multiple sclerosis. The conditioning and control of indoor environments is an ever increasing problem. Lately this does not only include the traditional control of temperature and moisture but also the elimination of contaminants and odors from the atmosphere. Particulates, including organic matter, such as mold, germs, and viruses, can be captured and retained by sometimes electrically assisted ultrafiltration. Cartridges are either discarded or cleaned/reactivated. For the elimination of chemicals and odors, absorption, adsorption, and chemical reactions with air purification media are required.

In our production environments there are four different levels of quality (see Chart 8.13). Unfortunately, we find that most of U.S. industry falls into one of the first two levels, where inspection and quality certification occur with the customer or at some other point at the end of the production process. This is unfortunate for many reasons. With level one and two, we often find that an extensive amount of unnecessary effort has been used to produce parts, and this effort could have been saved if the error had been caught earlier in the process. In addition, catching the problem late often means that the cost of rework is much higher. The sulfa dmgs are stiH important as antimicrobials, although they have been replaced in many systemic infections by the natural and semisynthetic antibiotics. They are of great value in third world countries where problems of storage and lack of medical personnel make appropriate use of antibiotics difficult. They are especially useful in urinary tract infections, particularly the combination of sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim. Their effectiveness has been enhanced by co-adniinistration with dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors, and the combination of sulfamethoxazole with trimethoprim is of value in treatment of a number of specific microbial infections. The introduction of this combination (cotrimoxazole) in the late 1960s (1973 in the United States) resulted in increased use of sulfonamides.
