Prison incidents

It is known, however, that drugs are readily available in many prisons, and the rate of adverse incidents and the time and effort spent in detecting smuggling of drugs in has been enough to persuade some authorities that at least the basics of treatment should be available. The most routine option has become to provide a detoxification for opiate misusers, with for instance lofexidine or dihydrocodeine, and also benzodiazepines will often be issued if there is a history of abuse of these and it is intended to avoid the possibility of fits with a short withdrawal course. The adverse incidents in custody and prisons have included some deaths in users of crack cocaine, with physical explanations postulated but no very satisfactory treatment for cocaine withdrawal indicated. Prison services have typically been wary of methadone, and in favouring lofexidine use it was encouraging that a randomized double-blind trial carried out by prison specialists found lofexidine to be as effective as methadone in relief of withdrawal symptoms (Howells et al. 2002). 

Since the attitude of the civilians towards the German soldiers was more positive in Italy than in the other European countries, few executions of hostages and reprisal prisoners took place there, apart from the special incident of the Fosse Ardeatine (March 24, 1944). 

Medicolegal problems, especially with the use of triazolam, have been discussed (SEDA-13, 33) debate continues on the interpretation of evidence that points to an increased incidence of adverse behavioral effects with triazolam (39), flunitrazepam, and other short-acting high-potency agents (12). A review has highlighted a substantial rate (0.3-0.7%) of aggressive reactions to benzodiazepines, and the fact that a majority so affected may have intended a disinhibitory effect, with clear forensic implications (40). High rates of benzodiazepine consumption, much of it illicit, continue in prison populations. 

Here the research statistics got fuzzy and perhaps a little creative to demonstrate the hypothesis that psilocybin therapy was effective in reducing the crime rate. In their paper published in Psychotherapy Theory, Research and Practice (Leary et al. 1965), the researchers broke the numbers down into types of return due to parole violations and due to new crimes. They found that, compared to a 50/50 incidence in the prison population as a whole, only 7% of project participants were returned for new crimes, with 52% returned for parole violations. One and one half years after termination of the program the rate of new crimes has been reduced from 28% to 7%, although if parole violations are counted the overall return rate has not changed. It is proposed that these results warrant further research into the potentials of the methods used, especially since no other method of reducing the crime rate exists. (Leary et al. 1965 Doblin 1998).

Queensland s State Premier received a letter threatening to infect wild pigs with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), which was feared might spread to cattle and sheep, unless prison reforms were implemented within 12 weeks. Ultimately, this incident proved to be a hoax as the perpetrator turned out to be a 37-year-old murderer serving a life sentence in a local jail. In December 1984, Queensland s premier received a similar letter from an unidentified individual [120, 280, 286]. 

The skin lesions were treated with debridement and applications of silver sulfadiazine and, in some cases, with topical steroids and antihistamines. Skin color was almost normal 3 months later. Topical steroids caused the conjunctival edema to begin to resolve in 48 hours. The only estimate of the amount of CN used was obtained from the prisoners, each of whom claimed to have been sprayed multiple times. Crime has definitely decreased in the United States from 1996 to 2002. This includes violent crimes and property crimes. However, the relationship between this decrease and drug abuse is unknown. There has been a decrease of about 12 percent in total number of crime incidents from 1996 to 2002. At the same time, there has been an increase of more than 20 percent in the number of people who were in prison during this same time period. Therefore, it is reasonable to suspect that the increased number of incarcerated individuals has contributed to a reduction in crimes. 

In the second half of the play, based again on an actual incident (this time from World War II), the audience sees the Student on active service in the army at war. He murders two defenceless prisoners of war. The street violence enacted at the school gates mirrors the state-sanctioned violence of war and invites the play s yoimg audiences to question both. The themes are the causes and function of violence and the social, cultural and political site in which that violence is enacted. The old woman bites Alice in the struggle surrounding the chair. The Soldier reports this incident to the authorities, and it transpires that the old woman has later been shot and killed by the Soldier. The Officer arrives to try and ascertain what Alice s intentions were in the incident described, and its possible implications. When Alice is being interviewed by the Officer, the fear and pressure of being in any sense related to the old woman, a prisoner on her way to likely execution, forces Alice to deny any known relationship, I didn t know her I couldn t know anyone in that state if Td lived with them for the whole of my life Take your photograph off my table where I eat (C, p. 135). However, when the Officer tries to disparage and further criminalise the old woman Your cheek is scarred. That is where the prisoner bit you, Alice insists that the prisoner had tried... 

Alice as if, finally, to speak, but in fact bites her face. The Soldier and his actions are driven and dominated by the ideological demands and constraints placed upon him. This engenders a fear that if the incidents with Alice and the Prisoner become public knowledge, he will be severely punished. In this context his automatic and conditioned response is both to blame Alice and to threaten her ... 

These regulations relate to incidents connected with work and cover not only employees and the self employed but members of the public, pupils and students, hotel residents, prisoners etc. who may suffer injury or death from an accident arising from or connected with work. The responsibility for reporting the accident lies with the employer or the person in charge of the premises where the work was being carried out. 

The United States also suggested that the World Health Organisation investigate the allegations. The Communist countries stated after some delay that they did not consider the IRC sufficiently free from political influence . IRC plans for an investigation were dropped. A supposedly independent commission the International Scientific Commission (ISC) - was set up and invited to Korea and China. The ISC s report gave accounts of alleged incidents and of statements made by American prisoners of war who, it was claimed, appeared not to have been subject to any form of duress.
