It must be made clear that WSL has only used olfactometers constructed on its own premises and calibrated by WSL staff one such instrument is the WSL Transportable model. (It is emphasised that this olfactometer is not the same as the commercially-available Portable model.) The WSL Transportable olfactometer and its operation have been described in detail previously (1) and only its main features need be reviewed here. From time to time, certain applications have required a special re-design of the olfactometer, e.g. to measure very weak odours, but the basic principles and the mode of operation have remained unchanged for some years. Various combinations of bioreactors and operation mode have been used for the production of mAbs in several systems of expression, as shown in Chapter 9. All cells utilized for the production of mAbs grow in suspension. Those that did not initially have this capacity have been adapted (as is the case for CHO and BHK) (Butler, 2005). This results in a large number of options for production systems. Cells with this characteristic are easily cultivated in stirred-tank reactors, which have been scaled up to a volume of 10 000 L (Chu and Robinson, 2001 Kretzmer, 2002). This kind of bioreactor provides excellent homogeneity, facility for the implementation of control techniques, and the principles of scaling up are relatively well known. Scrubber Ttfpes and Performance The diversity of particulate scrubber designs is so great as to defy any detailed and selhconsistent system of classification based on configuration or principle of operation. Electronic ratio controller. In this type of controller, a proportion of both gas and air is diverted through a bypass in which a thermistor sensor measures the flow. The air and gas flows can be compared and the ratio calculated and displayed. A ratio control valve in the air or gas supply, depending on whether the mode of operation is gas- or air-led, will automatically restore a deviation from the pre-set ratio. The electronic controller maintains ratio over a 19 1 turndown. The principle of operation is based on mass flow, so that it can be used with preheated air in recuperative systems. [Pg.278]

In this chapter, we present the principles of conventional Mossbauer spectrometers with radioactive isotopes as the light source Mossbauer experiments with synchrotron radiation are discussed in Chap. 9 including technical principles.
