Preventive management strategy

A preventive management strategy, operating from the water catchment to the tap, should be implemented to ensure drinking-water quality. The strategy should combine protection of water sources, control of treatment processes and management of the distribution and handling of water. 

The treatment of acute episodes of exertional rhabdomyolysis is aimed at alleviating pain and muscle contracture, correcting electrolyte and/or body fluid deficiencies and addressing renal dysfunction, if present. Horses with chronic problems typically benefit more from preventative management strategies, such as the combination of a diet low in carbohydrates (concentrates) with increased daily exercise (compared with stall confinement). Supplementation of horses with fats, in the form of corn oil or rice bran, has shown considerable promise. 

Grazing management strategies aim to reduce the contact of hosts to infectious GIN larvae on pasture. They can be divided into three categories (Barger, 1997) the preventive procedure, evasive grazing and dilusive grazing. 

Assessment for influenza and pneumococcal vaccine administration and assessment and management of other cardiovascular risk factors (e.g., smoking and antiplatelet therapy) are components of sound preventive medicine strategies. 

The relationship between man s welfare and stable natural ecosystems and agroecosystems can be established in terms of the economic and aesthetic values derived from them. In some situations, where ecosystems are stressed by oxidant pollutants, the benefits realized by present and future generations may soon diminish. Considerable research is required to find alternatives that prevent stress or that may salvage some of these benefits. New management strategies should be instituted only when their consequences are predictable within reasonable limits. 

The best management strategy for both aluminium and iron when used in treatment is to ensure that coagulation is optimized to prevent excessive amounts remaining in the drinking-water.
