Combined protection

A preventive management strategy, operating from the water catchment to the tap, should be implemented to ensure drinking-water quality. The strategy should combine protection of water sources, control of treatment processes and management of the distribution and handling of water. 

Studies on host-guest peptides have shown that incorporation of a proline residue into peptides which have a high tendency to fold into ordered secondary structures disrupts the onset of helical as well as P-sheet conformations and increases solubility and coupling rates.f Based on this observation, serine- and threonine-derived oxazolidine, and cysteine-derived thiazolidine derivatives (pseudoprolines) were proposed as valuable tools for combining protection of their side-chain functions with the simultaneous solubilization of the peptide chain. Due to the induction of kink conformations in the peptide backbone, originating from the preference of these pseudoproline residues to adopt the cis-imide bond configuration, insertion of such derivatives into peptides prevents self-association and P-structure formation. 

The treatment of cerebral or neurocysticercosis with praziquantel evokes some inflammatory problems related to the CSF reaction syndrome, which is characterised by headache, meningismus, fever and neurological problems. These side effects may be alleviated by simultaneous use of corticosteroids and praziquantel [87,88,91,96]. Accordingly more and more workers prefer to use corticosteroides, while treating cysticercosis of the brain with praziquantel. This combination protects the patients from the CSF reaction syndrome [97,98]. 

France. Trade secret protection per se does not exist in Franee. However, the combined protection afforded to manufacturing secrets, commercial secrets, and "know-how is similar to trade secret protection. To be eligible for such protection, the information must not be known by others in Franee (287). Manufacturing secrets must actually be used, or be ready for immediate use, in industry thus, ongoing research and development information or data may not qualify as a manufacturing secret. Protection is also afforded to know-how technical information that will ultimately be used in industry may be protected as know-how. Commercial secrets include commercial and financial information. Remedies for improper use include damages, injunctions, and specific performance. 

Use of the methoxyphenyl group as a latent P-ketoester represents the combined protection of two functional groups (ketone and ester) in a single moiety. It is very common to combine the protection of neighboring alcohol functions as henzylidene acetal, as an acetonide, or as a siladioxane (Scheme 7.12). Of these, the henzylidene acetals are most versatile, as they allow the selective deprotection of either the sterically more encumbered or less encumbered hydroxyl function [1,2].

The combined protection of two or more functional groups and the recourse to latent functionality are hallmarks of carefully planned syntheses. Consider the example in Scheme 7.13, which illustrates a key feature of the synthesis of FK506 by the Ireland group [33]. Only a partial structure of FK506 is shown. This unit, 56, is the latent counterpart of the hydroxyl-, keto-, and alkene-functions present in 57. The entity 56 was created early in the synthesis and carried through several steps until the desired functionaUty 57 was unveiled near the end of the synthesis.

There is much interest in the development of reactive groups within the polymer chain for improved weather resistance. There is demand for a stabilizer that will combine protection against oxidation as well as against energy sources like light and heat. 

A residual current operated circuit-breaker with integral overcument protection (RCBO) provides protection against overload and/or short-circuit. RCBOs give the combined protection of an MCB and an RCD in one device. 

The RCBO gives the combined protection of an MCB plus RCD for each final circuit so protected and, in the event of a fault occurring, only the faulty circuit is interrupted. This amangement is shown in the OSG at Figs 2.1 (i) to 2.1 (iii) and in this book at Figs 3.34 to 3.36. 

Cathodic Protection. In general, buried pipelines and tanks are protected by a combination of cathodic protection and an organic coating. This combination protects steel against corrosion in all soils, both effectively and economically, for as many years as cathodic protection is adequately maintained.

Adjustable breathability is an area where responsive barriers have already found commercial applications. For example, a thermoresponsive breathable membrane using shape memory polyurethane has been developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (SMP Technologies Inc., 2010). It can be laminated onto various types of textiles to provide waterproof, windproof yet breathable clothing. Another strategy based on a temperature-activated breathable monolithic film sandwiched between two layers of spunbond microfibrous polypropylene has been used by Ahlstrom Corp. to develop medical gowns that combine protection against virases with comfort and breathabUity (Rodie, 2005). 

Many geotextiles are developed as composites of woven and non woven materials. Examples include needled composites of a woven and a non woven geotextile. This can combine protection layers and filter product. In other examples, polyester yarns are knitted into a nonwoven fabric to create a reinforcement product with a separation functionality. 

The values for F above are not multiplicative if combined protection systems are in place. 

Much like the ruling powers of East Germany assigned work to be done to "collective combines" protected from any competition, we now do the same thing with all services and performance that can be rendered in our enterprise. Only in a very few areas do we allow the performance rendered by expert groups to compete with external firms, often as a result of questionable "make or buy" criteria.
