Press coverage

The extensive press coverage of the disaster became part of the national dialogue. Letters poured in to congressmen demanding action to prevent another such tragedy. Medical and pharmacy groups and journals insisted that a new law was required. Congress was in special session in November 1937, and did not need to be told... 

Much emphasis has been placed in this chapter on the use of survey information as a source of information in controlling chemical contamination of food. This has helped governments around the world to assess problems in this area. They have found that surveillance can stimulate action as well as press coverage. To get at good overview of contemporary daily press coverage of chemicals in Sweden and Poland, we have chosen to study texts from national newspapers, including one tabloid and one regional/local newspaper in each nation during an entire year (2007). A time frame of 12 months enables us to cover variations in interest for the subject and represents the kinds of content about chemicals that readers encounter in general. Because of difficulties in accessing media texts from Poland, we have extended the search period there to one and a half years (from January 2007 until June 2008).

The EPA can issue a combined complaint and consent agreement in one document. A combined complaint and consent agreement is advantageous to a respondent because any trade press coverage or EPA press release may include the settlement amount instead of the typically much larger proposed penalty.

There has never been an official explanation of the secrecy. I think it may have stemmed from a desire to avoid greater backlash from the Japanese themselves if the full story of the bombs effects on people, especially children, had been told at that time. There certainly was a determination among the American authorities then to suppress most of the relevant information. Even the press coverage was severely censored under rules of the occupation.

But still, the OHS profession struggles with communicating its role and value to executives, lawmakers and the public and in trying to get more and better press coverage. Its brand identity, 40 years after OSHA created a booming demand for professional services, is not strong.
